Authorities in Dongguan, a major industrial production base in southern China, have launched citywide nucleic acid tests and taken stringent multi-layered preventive actions such as closures, blockades and controls in several neighborhoods after two cases of new coronavirus infections were reported last Friday.
According to Reuters and other reports, Dongguan authorities also strictly control vehicles and people entering the city from the highway, only in and out, pending the results of nucleic acid testing to change control measures. And for vehicles and people leaving Dongguan to carry out epidemic prevention checks, they must test negative for nucleic acid within 48 hours before leaving. Meanwhile, some museums and libraries in the city have suspended their opening to the public. However, factories in the city are still open.
Since May 21 of this year, 168 cases of new coronavirus infections have been reported in Guangdong, nearly 90% of which were in the provincial capital Guangzhou. This infection is mainly due to a variant of the New Coronavirus strain Delta, a more infectious variant from India that was first identified in China. Guangdong province, a major entry point for passengers and cargo during the outbreak, apparently did not dare to risk taking things lightly.
Although no new infections have been reported in Guangzhou in the past two days, there are still sporadic new infections in the entire province of Guangdong, the report said.
Authorities have taken strict disinfection and isolation measures since May 21, resulting in a large number of cargo ships waiting to berth outside China’s busiest container port, Yantian Port in Shenzhen, where 50 remain, for a total of more than 160 ships already affected. Some maritime industry sources analyze that the impact will be even greater than the Suez Canal cargo ship incident. It is expected that port throughput will not return to normal until the end of June.
In addition, China’s National Health Commission reported 17 new cases of 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on June 20, of which 16 cases were imported from abroad, specifically 6 cases in Guangdong, 3 cases in Yunnan, 2 cases in Beijing, and 1 case each in some other provinces and cities. 1 locally confirmed case occurred in Guangdong.
