Trump: Tariffs on Chinese goods again if re-elected

In his first media interview on Thursday, President Trump, who was infected with the new coronary pneumonia last week, once again accused China of being responsible for the epidemic in the United States, saying he is “tired of China” and will impose tariffs on China again if he is re-elected president.

Trump spoke with Fox Business Network host Maria Bartiromo on Thursday about the U.S.-China trade war. Trump said he would impose tariffs on China again if he is re-elected president, noting that the first phase of the trade deal he signed with China earlier this year led to record-breaking purchases of U.S. soybeans and corn by China about two weeks ago.

Trump said, “They want to keep pleasing me because they know I’m on the verge of a fight. I’m tired of them, and everything that’s happening to us, the new coronavirus disease we’re having, the Chinese virus, is because of them. You look at the other epidemics we’ve had in the past, it’s because of them, and this isn’t the first time.”

Timothy Heath, senior fellow for international defense and China at the RAND Corporation, argues that contracting the new coronavirus may make Trump’s stance on China tougher, and that if Trump is re-elected, the administration may take some new actions, including restarting trade issues with China and increasing the intensity of its crackdown on China’s theft of U.S. technology.
