Xuzhou Public Security Bureau Refuses to Release News of Yu Wensheng’s Illness

Xu Yan, the wife of long-incarcerated human rights lawyer Yu Wensheng, recently revealed to her defense attorney that her right hand was shaking involuntarily and that she could not hold a pencil, in hopes of receiving medical treatment.

At the beginning of September, Yan applied to the Xuzhou City Public Security Bureau, where she is being held, for access to information about her husband’s illness and related records, but she was denied access at the end of September.

According to the Minsheng Observer, the Xuzhou Public Security Bureau rejected the request on the grounds that “information generated by public security organs in the course of performing their criminal judicial duties” did not fall within the scope of “government information disclosure regulations,” and decided not to disclose the information.

However, Xu Yan said that Yu Wensheng’s condition was a disability and her family had the right to know; Xu Yan was worried about her husband’s condition and asked the PSB to arrange for Yu Wensheng to go home for treatment.

In early 2018, he was arrested by the police after he proposed a constitutional amendment to the Constitution. In June of this year, the Chinese government sentenced Yu to four years in prison for “inciting subversion of power,” and he appealed in court.

In May of this year, German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with Yu’s wife, Xu Yan, during her visit to China.
