As the U.S. election date looms, President Trump is back in the race, 10 days after contracting the coronavirus. He addressed supporters from the White House balcony on Oct. 10 and is expected to travel to the key state of Florida on Oct. 12 to build momentum. White House doctors have announced that Trump’s tests show he is no longer at risk of infecting others.
White House physician Dr. Conley released a statement Saturday night saying, “Tonight, I am pleased to announce that, in addition to meeting all of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) criteria for ensuring a safe end to quarantine, the results of the coronavirus nucleic acid test (PCR) performed on him this morning show that he is no longer at risk of spreading (the virus) to others by currently accepted standards,” according to an AFP news release from Washington.
Trump and the first lady both tested positive for the coronavirus on October 1. He followed his doctor’s advice and was admitted to the Walter Reed military hospital in suburban Washington, D.C., on Oct. 2. There, after doctors put him on multiple medications, he felt significantly better after 24 hours and was discharged four days later, on Oct. 5.
White House physician Dr. Conley said Saturday that the president was fever-free, that all of his previous symptoms were “getting better,” that tests showed that the number of viruses was decreasing, and that there were no signs of the virus actively replicating. But Dr. Conley did not say whether Trump had turned negative. He stressed that Trump’s health would continue to be monitored.
Trump identified a combination of regeneron injections, among the various medications his doctors had given him, as being critical to his recovery. After he was released from the hospital, he said he was pushing for the experimental-stage drug to be delivered quickly to hospitals and made available to patients free of charge.
Trump’s warm-up yesterday was to address supporters gathered on the lawn from the White House balcony, where he said he felt good, urged people to go to the polls, and thanked all those who had prayed for him during his epidemic.
