Malaysian maritime authorities announced the arrest of 60 Chinese and the seizure of six Chinese-registered fishing boats for trespassing in Malaysian waters.
The Malaysian maritime law enforcement agency said it detained the crew and fishing boats during an operation off the coast of the southern state of Johor on Friday, and an investigation found that all the vessels were registered in China’s Qinhuangdao, and that the arrested crew members were all Chinese nationals between the ages of 31 and 60, according to Radio Television Hong Kong.
According to Reuters, Malaysia has seen 89 incursions into its waters by the Chinese border navy from 2016 to 2019.
The South China Sea is also a major gateway for global commerce. China’s claims to almost all of the South China Sea have created tensions between Beijing and neighboring countries in the South China Sea and the United States.
