Chinese Embassy in France Criticizes French Legislator Attacked by French Netizens

The election of China, Cuba and Russia to the United Nations Human Rights Council has sparked a strong backlash from international opinion makers and human rights organizations. Raphael Glucksmann, the French European parliamentarian who was the first to publicly show solidarity with the Uighurs in Xinjiang and has led a boycott of international brands associated with forced labor in the region, was attacked by the Chinese Embassy in France on Wednesday for tweeting that the United Nations had accepted “political manipulation.

Glucksmann’s tweet, which criticized the United Nations for accepting political manipulation to allow China’s election to the Human Rights Council and warned him to stop stirring up trouble over the Xinjiang issue as it relates to China’s internal affairs, was retweeted by the official Chinese embassy in France, which said: “No country, no power has the right to interfere in China’s internal affairs, and any attempt to oppose China will end in failure. ” The French parliamentarian responded by saying that he was elected by the French people, that the Chinese Embassy had no right to dictate to him, that he would continue his work to the end, and that he called on the Chinese government to quickly close the re-education camps in Xinjiang.

Interestingly, the Chinese embassy’s efforts to deter French lawmakers were immediately met with a wave of attacks from French netizens. Within an hour, dozens of comments appeared under the Chinese embassy’s tweets, almost uniformly criticizing the Chinese government’s shamelessness and expressing support for Grützman. The vast majority of these comments pointed out that human rights have no borders and that human dignity concerns all human beings. The tweets said, “Was the Nazis’ behavior also an internal affair of Germany in the first place? The Chinese government should revise its official language, rather than using the same old official language. Another netizen asked, “When are you going to apologize to the world for the Xin Guan epidemic? When will you stop slaughtering animals and when will you start treating them well? Some netizens also criticized countries that voted for China at the UN for losing their principles in the face of their interests. Netizens called on the French government as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to respond to the Chinese embassy’s threats against French lawmakers. Several members of the European Parliament expressed their solidarity with Gerukzman, and French Green Party member Yannick Jadot said the Chinese government must stop exerting foreign pressure.

The French sinologist and fellow of the French Foundation for Strategic Studies, Mr. Peng Dazhi, also tweeted that Chinese diplomats in France must also learn how to handle public criticism from the French public and political circles. Chinese officials are not used to this. Chinese officials are not accustomed to this, because they have to convince people with reason and facts, instead of repeatedly hiding the facts or organizing meetings attended only by their supporters.
