The U.S. media have been reporting on the email scandal involving the son of Democratic presidential candidate Biden, but Facebook and Twitter have been banned from reposting the reports. The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee said on October 16 that it would subpoena the CEOs of the two social media outlets to testify.
The New York Post recently reported that it had obtained a computer discarded by Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, that contained information about the Biden father and son’s business dealings in Ukraine.
But the Biden campaign denied that Biden had ever met with the Ukrainian businessman mentioned in the report, and Facebook and Twitter have restricted users from reposting links to the news in cases of doubt about its authenticity.
The Republican camp is furious, saying the Facebook and Twitter moves are actually partisan censorship. President Trump, who is lagging in the polls, also lashed out mercilessly at the two social media outlets.
The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee said on March 16 that it will hold a hearing next week to compel Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to testify, and has invited Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to testify.
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blasted Twitter and Facebook as “reprehensible” for censoring the New York Post’s reporting on March 16.
The Biden campaign said they had no problem with the censorship of Twitter and Facebook, and even admitted they were “pleased” with it.
