The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Thursday sent a letter to the Department of Justice and other government agencies asking them to assess whether China Unicom’s operations in the United States pose a national security risk.
The agencies asked major U.S. government agencies to explain whether and how China Unicom Americas is being used, influenced, and controlled by the Chinese government, and the national security and law enforcement risks associated with that use. In addition, they asked whether the departments had mitigation measures in place to address these concerns.
In April of this year, the FCC issued a show-cause order warning that they may revoke the U.S. licenses of three Chinese state-owned telecommunications companies, including China Telecom Americas, China Unicom Americas, and ComNet (USA), a subsidiary of PacificNet, to operate in the United States. The three companies have since urged the agency not to revoke their licenses to operate.
China Unicom Americas received a license to operate international telecommunications services in the United States nearly two decades ago.
