On May 22, Gansu Baiyin cross-country marathon, 21 participants were killed. An important question is: Was the rescue timely?
We went to the scene, found some participants, rescuers, and local villagers who witnessed the accident, and tried to restore the timeline of the whole accident.
If you look closely at these time points, you will find that the warning signs have been there for a long time, but they don’t seem to be getting feedback. At present, the official has not yet released any detailed rescue report.
At 3 a.m. on the 24th, at the Ziling Mountain Mausoleum near Baiyin, a family member of one of the victims told us that the staff would not let the families contact each other. She said she just wants to know how her father died. She just wants an answer.
On the morning of the 24th, the Yellow River Rock Forest Scenic Area was open as usual.
On the afternoon of the 24th, the injured were still being treated at the First People’s Hospital of Baiyin City and the People’s Hospital of Jingtai County.

Weather forecast
Reviewing the weather afterwards, the public number “China Weather Lovers” wrote. “The day is very hot, Baiyin City, Jingtai County, the sun shines, the temperature is climbing, the highest afternoon has reached 25.6 degrees, standing in the sun, is a proper summer feeling. “
Participants in the cross-country runners, so judge the focus of the second day is to prevent heat and sun, if heatstroke, will lead to heat exhaustion.
Gansu Provincial Meteorological Bureau issued a special forecast, “21-22 Gansu Province, there is a windy dust, cooling and precipitation weather process ……5 month has entered the strong convective weather time, pay attention to prevent short-time heavy precipitation, the hail, lightning, gusts of wind and other adverse effects.”
According to the Meteorological Bureau of Jingtai County, the main leaders of the Bureau sent a special report on the weather information of the competition venue to the main leaders of the organizing committee. The weather special report provided information on minimum temperature, maximum temperature, wind level and wind direction.
But specific information on the transit of cold air was not available,” CNN said. “
20:00 Pre-race technical meeting
In the conference room of the Shilin Hotel. The room was full, with horse ties on the side and people standing in the back.
The course director introduced the course and notes: how to use GPS, how to identify road signs, where the course climbs more, the design of supply points, etc.. The CP point, which was mentioned repeatedly, is the Checking Point (punching point), which must be punched when the runner passes in order to count the result.
Photographer Guo Jian filmed the whole course, and he knew that this technical meeting was mainly about explaining the course: the runners could not be as familiar with the course as their usual training grounds, and had to introduce the terrain, landforms, geological features, and road conditions – whether it was a gravel road, a dirt road or a highland meadow.
During the briefing, the race authorities reminded everyone that CP3 (the third punching point) does not have any resupply and runners have to pass quickly, and the transit point is at CP6.
The closing time of this race is 20 hours, and most of the runners have to spend the night on the way. A bag storage area is set up at the halfway point, so runners can transport their clothes in advance, so that they can change shoes, clothes or eat something when they arrive, which also reduces the burden when they start.
Runner Chen Hui (a pseudonym) was half an hour late, and by then the meeting had come to an end, so he only managed to put the supplies into the transfer bag and handed it up to be transported to CP6 by the race team.
Chen Hui’s participation in this race was purely by chance. He originally signed up for the marathon in Yinchuan on May 23, but the race was postponed due to the sudden outbreak of epidemic in Yinchuan. He was told by Zhou, a Shenzhen runner, that there was a trail running race here in Baiyin, and someone withdrew from the race and could switch places, so he filled in. Chen Hui loves to run marathons, only in the past two years to try cross-country, there are three trail running experience, but the 100 km distance is the first time. He said, this is his “first 100” challenge.
The night before the race, Chen Hui habitually checked the weather forecast. It showed: Baiyin City, tomorrow cloudy, windy. Everything is normal, he said, he did not take the wind thing to heart.
May 22nd
7:36 Liang Jing’s breakfast
Photographer Guo Jian sent a circle of friends: “eight small rolls to open the Yellow River stone forest rain war” – In the morning he checked the weather and found that it was forecast to start raining at 10:00 or 11:00 and would continue to rain until 7:00 pm.
Half an hour ago, he met the hotshot who won the competition, 31-year-old Liang Jing, in the restaurant of the Shilin Hotel. Guo Jian knew the face, and he plucked up the courage to talk to Liang Jing, wanting to see what the god was eating before the race. The other side said, just three eggs and some congee.
“Why not a flower roll? “
“Do not want to eat rolls, there are steamed buns can eat a little. “
7:58 The weather has changed
One hour from the race, Guo Jian arrived early at CP1 and found the weather was cloudy.
From 8:00 a.m., Jingtai County blew a gale, the maximum gust of wind reached 6; from the Yellow River Stone Forest Geopark nearest Shimen Township, the temperature began to drop at a steady rate of one degree an hour.
However, at this time, there was still sunshine in the geopark, and the runners waiting for the start did not realize that the cold front cloud band was about to strengthen in the sublime mountains. (“China Weather Enthusiast”)
Throughout the Yellow River Rock Forest scenic area, traces of the cross-country race could be seen everywhere. Only the start and finish of the 100km cross-country race is inside the scenic area, and a larger outer circle on the route is all outside the scenic area in the barren mountains.
The stone bridge on the road outside the scenic area is painted with big words: 2021 (the fourth) Yellow River Stone Forest Mountain Marathon, 100 km off-road race and rural revitalization health run. As well as, “Conquer the Yellow Horse, ask for the Stone Forest! “. When you enter the scenic spot, you can see the red flag every few steps with the organizer of this cross-country run: “Shengjing Sports Shilin 100”.
9:00 The wind blew away the hat
Before coming to participate, Chen Hui searched the previous editions of the Shilin race, the news mentioned that some people had heatstroke. He decided to protect himself from the sun and wore compression pants and a pair of sports shorts outside. The short-sleeved T-shirt was issued by the race committee, and he added a sleeve cover to protect against UV rays.
When the gun went off, the wind started to pick up, the runners excitedly rushed across the start line, the starting point was a long downhill, the wind blew away many people’s hats, everyone ran back to chase and pick up.
9:59 CP1 through the canyon, did not feel the wind
Photographer Guo Jian’s key task, is to shoot the runners in the “first group” – that is, the fastest runners. the fastest runners. He had to get to the CP point before them and take pictures of the pit stop and exit.
One hour into the race, Guo Jian captured the top three runners of the 100km cross-country race in CP1. He saw Liang Jing again. Liang Jing was wearing a black long-sleeved skinsuit, sports shorts, two legs exposed, and very light on her feet.
This section was easy for everyone to run, with people running in the canyon, all on gentle slopes. Chen Hui later told us that the overall climb was about 400 meters, he did not feel the wind at that time, the original estimate of 2 hours, he only used 1 and a half hours to get there.
10:40 CP2 First warning, no feedback
After playing the first card, Chen Hui ran out of the canyon and the course became open. At first, he didn’t feel any wind resistance, instead he felt relaxed, and then recalled afterwards that it was probably downwind and he didn’t realize the increase in wind.
At this point in CP2, just 11km away, the weather had gotten significantly worse.
At 10:40, in CP2, Guo Jian saw Liang Jing again. Guo Jian was standing on a high ground with his telephoto camera on a tripod, and his machine was being blown back and forth by the wind. In the picture, the clouds were dense and the wind was strong.
After Guo Jian finished shooting the “first group”, at around 11:00, it started to rain and he asked his colleague to ask the organizing committee if the race was going to be terminated, but got no feedback. He and his colleagues drove directly to CP4.
CP3 was bypassed: the checkpoint was on a hill, so the car couldn’t drive up and the supplies couldn’t go up. Guo Jian heard that there was only one timing point set up there with two staff members, only punching in, no supplies and no stops.
12:00 CP2-CP3 Some people began to withdraw
One hour later than the first group, at 11:30, Chen Hui also ran to CP2, and he didn’t pause much, then ran to CP3.
This is the most difficult part of the race, climbing nearly 1000 meters and crossing a mountain. Usually off the beaten track, there is not much road, the race team will be signposted on the roadside rocks, there is a road sign at some distance. Chen Hui said, later the wind up, part of the road signs were scraped away.
The rain started to fall, mixed with small hail. From CP2 to CP3 climbed less than half, about 12 o’clock, he met the first person to retreat, an old man in Chongqing, followed by two or three people down one after another. They told him that it was very windy and cold up there, so don’t go up there again.
Not long after, Chen Hui could no longer stand, he took shelter behind a large stone, found that the rain was getting heavier and heavier, and within a few minutes, the heat on his body quickly dissipated. Chen Hui was shivering, could not hold anything, his feet and legs began to cramp, decided to immediately retreat back.
Return, Chen Hui took out the mandatory equipment insulation blanket, which is a PET film material of silver film, like tin foil as thin, draped on the body not long, the blanket was cracked by the wind. On the way back to the withdrawal, he advised the oncoming runners that it was very windy and cold up there, but people still decided to climb up. He soon met his friend Zhou as well and advised him to forget about it. Zhou, one of the few people with a rash guard, felt fine: “I’ll go up again. “
12:17 the first message for help
When was the first message for help sent? Sent by who? No one knows at the moment.
On May 23, Baiyin City press conference notice: the race to noon, 100 km cross-country race high altitude stage 20 km to 31 km sudden disaster weather, a short time local sudden hail, freezing rain and accompanied by high winds, the temperature plummeted.
At 12:17, a participant posted a request for help in the race group. The race organizing committee received the news, “arranged rescue force of 20 people immediately set off to the mountain cross-country race track rescue participants, has rescued 18 participants. “
Later, this race group was disbanded.
About 13:00 small stone house saved a lot of people
On the way down the withdrawal, Chen Hui found a small stone house on the side of the road, entered the door and found that there were already four people inside, he was the fifth.
Outside the house, stood a blue sky rescue team members, which is also Chen Hui in the entire CP2-CP3 section of the only service personnel to see. The team member has been holding a walkie-talkie communication, calling other rescuers up, and later met a serious loss of temperature participants, the rescue team member took off his own blue rashers to him, Chen Hui saw, after which the team member outside the house shivering with cold.
Small stone house of people one after another, this area of twenty to thirty square feet of small space has never been more lively. Half an hour later, Zhou also arrived. Chen Hui found him shivering in his rash jacket. More than forty players were huddled together, draped in silver insulation blankets, no one was eating, and everyone was shivering constantly.
Players only feel sorry for the withdrawal, someone recorded a video, recorded in a self-deprecating tone full of people in the room: “Come when it is still good, ha ha ha, can not go back! “
We later interviewed Zhou Yahui, a volunteer with the Pinglan Charity Foundation. He said that the players were actually in the most dangerous state of temperature loss at this time. The general wilderness is divided into three degrees of hypothermia, mild hypothermia performance is, constantly shivering, chills, core body temperature down to about 35 degrees. When the temperature loss is moderate, people “simply do not have the energy to shiver”, thinking will fall into chaos, emotions become indifferent. When the core temperature drops below 32 degrees, it is a severe loss of temperature, the person’s thinking is completely confused, losing the ability to act.
In the mountains, there are high winds and rain, “wind chill effect” intensified, the loss of temperature will be faster than in the winter stay outside. General golden rescue time in about half an hour, once to the state of severe loss of temperature is very difficult to rescue. Many people fell on the mountain, at first consciousness will be blurred, but people are still alive. But this is equivalent to the process of slowly waiting for death, unless the start moving again.
Chen Hui remembered that two people were later helped in by the Blue Sky rescue team, the older one had severe hypothermia and was already confused, the other participants held him and tried to give him something to eat to slow him down, he could not even open his teeth. In his ear to talk, but also little response, eyes unfocused. Another younger one, consciousness is also too unconscious. We all held these two people together, using their bodies to transfer heat, waiting for them to warm up again. Fortunately, both of them slowed down one after another.
13:32 A shepherd and two village clerks
In order to avoid the rain, Zhu Keming, a villager from Chang Sheng village, took refuge in his kiln at noon. The kiln is in the middle of CP2 and CP3 on the race route, about 2,200 meters above sea level.
According to Xinjing News, this is an abandoned kiln, the cave is not big, five or six square meters, Zhu Keming had left here a pair of his pants, some firewood, discarded books. Later it was these items left by chance that saved six people. Zhu Keming heard a man’s voice coming from outside the cave. He walked out and found a man walking slowly outside the kiln with his arms wrapped around him. The man was wearing a green T-shirt and said his leg was cramping up. Zhu Keming helped the man into the cave. Immediately afterwards, four players also came to Zhu Keming’s kiln. Zhu Keming lit a fire with discarded books and matches. The air soon became warm. I heard that many players were freezing in the mountains. He went out again to look for them, and finally, he and a player found a man lying on his back, holding a thermal blanket, on the ridge. Together they carried him back. Six runners took refuge in the kiln in this way.
At 1:32 p.m., Wang Qinlin received a call from the branch secretary of the village of Changsheng. Wang Qinlin is the village secretary of Humashui village. The village of Changsheng and Humashui bordered the lower part of the mountain range parallel to each other, three kilometers apart.
The village branch secretary of Changsheng village said that Zhu Keming had saved a few contestants in the mountains and needed support.
“Zhu Keming is our village son-in-law. “Wang Qinlin said. Later, the villagers of Humashui village saw the news of “shepherd even saved six mountain cross-country runners”. They all said, in the past, “a sheep herder, how will be famous! “
However, the rescue of the six runners did not only rely on Zhu Keming. Wang Qinlin quickly organized more than twenty villagers who were working on their own home renovations and advanced toward the kiln where Zhu Keming was. He was busy building a new house these two days.
He asked each villager to bring two or three pieces of cotton clothes for winter, quilts searched from the village committee, some buns and hot water.
“I go up this mountain every day, the fastest speed two hours, never thought it would freeze to death. “Wang Qinlin said. The cross-country marathon has been held for four years, and the route is different every year. The first year, they passed through the sand ditch in front of their village, and they were responsible for pulling the cordon and cleaning up the garbage and other activities. Last year, the participants ran over the top of the hill on their roof again. The villagers were surprised to learn that these city folk were willing to pay the entry fee to run up their “unloved” hill.
14:00 Rescue time
When did the rescue begin?
May 23, Baiyin City press conference notice said, 14:00, rescue workers arrived at the mountain up the point, found that the weather conditions are not optimistic, so the race organizing committee contacted the Yellowstone Forest Scenic Area Management Committee. Scenic area management committee sent scenic emergency teams to rescue, and the race party after the study and judgment, asked to immediately stop the race, and requested rescue reinforcements.
In the afternoon, the incident was cascaded from the county level to the provincial level. Gansu Province responded by organizing emergency rescue forces with drones, thermal imaging drones, radar detectors and other facilities and equipment to carry out the rescue.
14:30 Where did Liang Jing go?
Guo Jian did not know what was happening ahead, 2:30 pm, he was still waiting in CP4, but the first group of players were late to appear.
The CP4 resupply point was bustling, with a stove in the tent, beef soup stew, and small, clean tomatoes in paper bowls. People were curious as to why no runners had shown up – at Liang Jing’s pace, it shouldn’t have.
People decided to go to meet the players, three blue sky rescue team members set out, Guo Jian and colleagues also followed up the mountain to see. People did not realize that this was a rescue, Guo Jian still holding the tripod, walked two kilometers and stopped.
14:37, Guo Jian met the first player, a colleague escorted to. The male runner had a slight loss of temperature and was wearing a colleague’s jacket. The male runner said he was originally wearing a skin suit, not windproof, not waterproof, and said that many road signs on the mountain were blown out, and he ran two kilometers wrong, using an offline map to find his way. He chatted without stopping to run, he told Guo Jian, there are 16 or 17 people up there who have lost temperature.
The male runner said he had participated in three trail runs, and once ran to 70 kilometers before retiring. He was the first person to clock in at CP4, but he said he was not a senior runner.
Where did Liang Jing and the first group of runners go?
15:00 The scenery all mobilized to rescue
Male runners continue to set off forward after resupplying at CP4.
Guo Jian found the station manager and the head of the camera team and relayed the situation of a dozen runners losing temperature on the mountain.
At the same time, the scenic area of the battery driver Liu Yuan (a pseudonym) received a notice that the entire company to “to the first line” to rescue the mountain. He knew that hail had fallen for an hour or two at noon, and perhaps an accident had occurred. He changed into warm clothes and also brought a quilt and cotton jacket to climb up Mijiashan, which is also a mountain pass located in the middle of CP2 to CP3, with an altitude of 2320 meters. The scenery could see the shadow of Mijiashan from the fog, a flat-headed hill, but it actually took them two hours to climb up.
He was involved in the rescue of four runners. The first three runners eased over. When the last runner was found, the man still had a breath, but by the time he was carried down, he was broken.
15:34 The crowd called the police, another shepherd
At this moment, the command center of the Baiyin Fire and Rescue Detachment received an alarm from the public that a cross-country race participant was trapped in the track at the top of a large cow dung bay in Luyang Town, Jingtai County, Baiyin City, and could not get down the mountain.
Lu Youduo also set out. He was one of the first five villagers sent up by the village support Wang Qinlin. He is 41 years old, has an inch haircut, wears all black clothes and has a pair of keen little eyes. For the past forty years, he has not left Humashui village, and usually grazes his forty to fifty sheep on the hillside not far from Guojiayao.
Lu Youduo chose the fastest vertical route. They set off towards Zhu Keming’s kiln, but even for Lu Youduo, a shepherd familiar with mountain roads, it took him two or three hours at the fastest.
At this time, four ambulances and several private cars from the rescue team were already waiting at CP2. Chen Hui, Zhou and the first group of evacuees were warming up inside.
They were wearing a variety of coats, are nearby villagers temporarily put together winter clothes, at about 3:00 by the rescue team tied back to the small stone house. Set on the clothes, blue sky rescue team suggested they run down by themselves, “the car can not drive up, sooner or later, they have to walk down by themselves. “
About 4:00, the bus finally arrived, CP2 of these players boarded the car, Chen Hui wore a leather coat, Zhou set an old suit, the car started, they left the race.
16:30 Four people clocked up CP4
At CP4, the camera colleagues who went out to check the situation were late, and Guo Jian decided to go out and look for them. At 4:30 p.m., Guo Jian found his colleague on the track, the other side had frozen a bit and lost temperature. The colleague said that he had walked all the way to CP3 and walked out for another two kilometers, but he still hadn’t found any of the runners, and along the way he experienced high winds, hail and fog.
Guo Jian and his colleagues started to retreat to CP4. At around 4:40 p.m., they were greeted by the organizing committee staff, the Blue Sky Rescue Team members at the CP4 site, and doctors who were taking supplies up the mountain. Waiting for his own back to CP4, Guo Jian found that the car was missing, the driver had gone to pick up the firefighters, there is no signal in the mountains, can not navigate, there must be people who know the way out to meet the fire fighters.
In this afternoon, CP4 received a total of four players. By 4:42 p.m., there was still a Chongqing female runner clocking in. At this time the punching point still did not know the news of stopping the race. Except for one who chose to give up, the other three clockers all continued to run on.
17:00 in the dark
More than 5:00 pm, Chen Hui returned to the finish line. At that time, he did not know that casualties had begun to appear above, thought it was just an ordinary trail running race interrupted by a sudden downpour.
After arriving at the finish line, he had a bowl of hot noodle soup and took some pictures of the surrounding scenery, then went back to his room to cut the video. around 7 p.m., he posted the edited film on the short video platform with a light-hearted and witty tone.
A day later, he dared not look at the comments again, he said, and then there were a lot of sounds and curses of everything.
18:00 Six people in the kiln
At 6 p.m., it was still dark. Lu Youduo and villagers from Humashui village finally arrived at the kiln and saw the six players saved by Zhu Keming. Five of them were still able to speak, and Lu Youdao took pictures of them: two women with blue lips, a dark teenager in fair spirits (he even gave a “yay” to his cell phone camera), and a middle-aged man. “), and a middle-aged man with a red nose from the cold.
They transported the five runners down the back of the mountain by human power, with villagers picking them up every ten meters or so, for fear that the road would be unfamiliar and this would be the most efficient. A total of a dozen runners were saved by the villages of Changsheng and Humashui. Villagers stressed: “All are alive. ”
The last player to enter the kiln was more seriously injured. He was a man in his 60s. Lu Youduo and the others did not dare to move easily and waited in the kiln for the firefighters to rescue him. Fortunately, the last man in the kiln also survived.
Xinhua news agency said: 18:00 or so, the preliminary statistics found that 139 participating athletes have been picked up, there are still 33 people lost.
19:00 Did the search and rescue come too late?
At this time, firefighters arrived at CP4 and began to enter the mountain rescue. It was also about this time that a driver who came back from a search and rescue trip up the mountain told them that someone had been killed on the mountain. The original shooting plan was the same as the race time, which ended at 5:00 am on the 23rd. After the firefighters arrived, Guo Jian asked the person in charge of the shooting to continue, the other side said the event had been suspended, no need to shoot, go back.
Only then did Guo Jian know that the game had been suspended. Afterwards, Guo Jian said he didn’t expect the massive search and rescue to come so late, starting only at 7:00 pm. If earlier, there may be more survivors.
He drove back to the hotel with his colleagues and driver, and when they passed CP5, a lady from the organizing committee stopped their car and said there was a female runner still running on the course. When they got to CP6, the tents at the site had been removed, leaving only people and cars. The people at the site said that the female runner borrowed a jacket from a volunteer, took some naan and continued running.
20:20 A runner is still running
At 68 kilometers from the start, photographer Guo Jian found the female runner from Chongqing. He pulled her into the car. She cried while calling the organizing committee, “I can finish running why not let me finish running? “
The organizing committee said there was no more supplies behind. The runner said, “I do not need supplies, I brought my own supplies will be enough. I have come to such a difficult place in front of me, behind all the downhill, only 30 kilometers, I can definitely finish the race, why not let me run? “
She didn’t know what was happening at the back at that time.
21:00 Are there still vital signs?
Another group of villagers from Humashui Village searched along the banks of the Yellow River, the same route the participants had taken. The hillside gullies were criss-crossed, and many of the contestants were hiding in the gullies for shelter, some lying on the ground, and some still walking. The rescue became particularly difficult, where there was no longer soft ground, but a rocky surface with many firewood seeds growing.
When they saw the “players with vital signs”, they wrapped the players tightly with quilts and kept rubbing their bodies with both hands. Village support Wang Qinlin said, “no vital characteristics, first put this next. “They saw some remains one after another. Finally, it was the armed police and firefighters who carried away the remains.
According to the “North Youth Deep One” report, a firefighter recalled that at about 9:00 that night, his detachment found a contestant on the track between CP4 and CP3, his vital signs were already weak and he couldn’t communicate with rescuers, and only after taking him to a nearby kiln for warmth measures and hydration did the contestant slowly recover. That night, the firefighter’s team searched and rescued the remains of 10 participants, three of whom were found in the ravine next to the track, most of them wearing shorts and short sleeves, some wearing only undershirts, when the temperature in the mountains was only about 1 degree.
23:00 Wake up in the middle of the night
After returning to the hotel, Chen Hui went to bed at almost 11:00, and slept until about 12:30, when he suddenly woke up, remembering that he glanced at his watch, thinking how only an hour and a half? Then he lost sleep.
24:00 Villagers rescue people, kiln vigil
Special police, armed police and firefighters were unfamiliar with the road, and the locals were the fastest, so the rescue relied on the locals to take everyone up.
At 12:00 noon, 720 rescuers went up, and by dawn, up to 1,000 people. Villagers from Longwan Village and Hulhumashui Village all went up. The ambulance was waiting at the scene. The last one rescued was a 60-year-old seriously injured member of the team.
The governor of Jingtai County and the armed police were all up there. After picking up the wounded man, the governor saw that Lu Youduo had no light and the road was dark, so he let them wait in the kiln until dawn and then go down the mountain to avoid secondary injuries.
Lu Youduo and the villagers slept in the kiln for the night. Said to sleep, in fact, did not close their eyes, a dozen people can not squeeze. They picked up Zhu Keming’s firewood, continue to make fire, roast hot to go outside to stand for a while, cold to go in, so the rotation, until dawn.
According to China Newsweek, Jingtai County Strip Mountain Fire Rescue Station members went up the mountain that night and found four contestants in a kiln built by shepherds grazing sheep, with two local villagers looking after them. The rescue team found that only one of the four had vital signs, the other three had frozen to death, one of them, the top domestic cross-country runner Liang Jing.
May 23rd
Unanswered phone calls in the early morning
Xiao Lu’s mother received an unfamiliar phone call, the other party said, Dad is missing. Mom was in an emotional breakdown. Two o’clock, Xiao Lu tried to call back, the other party is the rescue command center. Called twice, no one answered.
After a while, one after another people looking for her, her father’s running group of friends, her friends have sent a shake video, asking if this is a little like your father? The video shows a man lying on the ground, leaving a white foam at the corner of his mouth. At that time, she and her mother thought that this man was her father, Justice Lu.
In the middle, Mom tried to call Dad’s phone once. The call was answered, but no one spoke on the other side.
6:00 The news came out
Chen Hui got up, opened his phone and was flooded with messages. Various people forwarded him news links, and he realized that something big had happened here and someone had been killed. Before he added the participants WeChat group, but usually the news does not move hundreds of thousands, he rarely participate in the chat, and do not read much, usually from Zhou to understand the news.
After getting up, the innkeeper told him that the scenic spot might be closed, and he and Zhou decided to leave immediately to go back to Baiyin City. “From 6 o’clock to evacuate the scenic area, to the evening, my head has been dizzy, can not wake up. “He remembers that at noon that day he ate in downtown Baiyin, then took the airport bus and flew to Xi’an, that was arranged in advance for the trip.
6:00 Rush to Baiyin
Xiao Lu’s mother took a shuttle bus from the county to Guiyang, and then took a flight from Zhengzhou to Lanzhou.
At 3:00 a.m., Xiao Lu also took a connecting flight from Wuhan to Lanzhou. On the plane, she felt bewildered, not knowing whether she should go to the Public Security Bureau or to the scenic spot after landing? On the plane, she wrote down one after another many memories of spending time with her father.
“Dad said that the family kept a bottle of wine for many years, waiting for the day of my wedding to open together as a family. “
“Remembered the first week of high school residence, my father came to see me, and also specially fried me two dishes, one is shredded potatoes, one is celery beef, see, my powerful father is also an ordinary father. “
At that time there was no media attention to her. Many people questioned her for “bringing the rhythm” – “What kind of person would send out a picture of your dad? If it’s true, give your dad some decency. Later, Weibo found her and certified her as a “family member of the victims of the Gansu Mountain Marathon accident “.
9:30 The last lost person
CCTV news reported that at 9:30 this morning, the last person lost in this race has been found, but there are no vital signs.
After arriving in Lanzhou in the morning, Xiao Lu’s mother received a call from the other side saying that Justice Lu had passed away.
13:00 The loneliness of a deaf runner
Li Shan (pseudonym) received a WeChat from a former colleague of Mianyang Evening News, the other party sent a photo: “Remember him? Yesterday in Gansu to participate in the marathon was killed. “She was shopping with friends, stopping to look closely, only to recognize that it was an interview subject seven years ago, deaf marathon runner Huang Guanjun.
“Fate is such an injustice. ” she replied, and then tears flowed down her face.
The first image that came to her mind was the winter seven years ago when she and her colleagues went to the Beichuan Rehabilitation Center for the disabled. 27-year-old Huang Guanjun was standing at the door waiting for them wearing only a thin blue sweatshirt, and the boy looked even thinner as the wind blew against him.
At that time, Huang Guanjun was studying Qiang embroidery and computer design, “before he looked for a job in Chengdu, because the communication barrier hit the wall many times, discouraged for a while”, he looked forward to He was looking forward to a new job that would make his life better. During the interview, the women communicated with pen and paper. Huang Guanjun’s words needed to be pieced together slowly, but Li Shan said the sense of loneliness was a complete narrative that could be expressed without words.
Li Shan said she asked Huang Guanjun how much he communicated with his parents, and he wrote under his dad, “No,” and drew a horizontal line under his mom and wrote. “less”, then she asked her sister? He wrote again: “less”. She said Mom and Dad are busy, but they love you too, so he wrote: “No, not like deaf and dumb, boring. “
Seven years later, Li Shan still remembers this detail. That was also the first time she really felt the loneliness of a person, even the closest people can not relieve. “He is very sensitive, will subconsciously observe the eyes of the next person, with a little ingratiating. “
Huang Guanjun’s greatest joy in life is running. Li Shan remembers, near the end of the interview, Huang Guanjun gave her a tennis bag of medals and certificates. That was all his pride. Before that, he had signed up for so many races on his own, going to Xichang and Qionghai. Without a professional coach, the boy used the only computer in the room to look up some videos on his own and follow them to learn how to run better.
Li Shan felt that the meaning of running for this boy is like seeing a little light in the boundless darkness, and then can’t wait to grasp this light in your hands.
These years, Li Shan seldom heard news of Huang Guanjun, and then QQ is not much login, she also did not chat with the screen name “lonely alone” Huang Guanjun.
The first time I heard from him was now.
14:30 The father in the bag
Xiao Lu and her mother arrived in Lanzhou. The organizing committee contacted her mother and said that someone would come to pick them up from the plane and receive them to “a hotel in downtown Baiyin”, which hotel, the other party would not say. She was reluctant and said she had to see her father.
At 2:30 p.m., they finally arrived at the Ziling Mountain Mausoleum, a ten-minute drive from downtown. She saw her father in a bag, still wearing a set of blue sports shorts, shorts, hands clasped tightly, as if for warmth, toes frozen nails curled up.
15:50 The phone tied to the calf
Forensics came and gave Dad an examination. Xiao Lu saw that Dad had stab wounds on his head, turned over, his buttocks and waist were wounds. A towel was wrapped around his hand, or washed clean before his mom left the house.
She wanted to know where Dad had the accident and what time he died, but the staff’s answer was always just one sentence, “The results are not yet available. “All the news about the accident was what she saw on Twitter herself: were there not enough supply points? Why is there no mandatory rushing suit? Who is the operator behind the scenic spot?
At the funeral home, she heard a familiar ringing sound. Later, Mom said it must have come from Dad’s legs. Dad wore a pair of stockings that came down to his calves and had a looped tie on them. She looked closely and saw that Dad’s Huawei phone was hidden behind his calf. She took out the phone, no password, could not open. Half a nail cap of sand seeped into the phone’s membrane. She thought, this should be the dad rescue time scraped it.
Later the staff sent other relics from the hotel, a large school bag, a daughter Xiaolu bought a water bottle, and a bag of fruit, which was a plum that dad brought from home, nothing more.
May 24
3:00 a.m. The funeral home mourning
Ten deceased people were lying in the freezer of the funeral home, and five hearths were lined up on each side with wreaths. The scene played mourning music. Xiao Lu ran out of the funeral home wearing a thick military coat. She was 21 years old, tied her hair, and had a calmness beyond her age. She asked the staff for a military coat, saying it was too cold here and that she must have one. Later the staff bought clothes and two fireplaces.
She said her mother and aunt could not restrain their emotions from the moment they got off the bus. “I have to take responsibility. “She was the only one who came out and told the staff to come to her if anything happened. She was also the one who kept Dad’s vigil that night, with Mom’s aunt sleeping lightly on the hearse table.
She was the one who took the idea. She was the one to tweet, and she was the one to meet the reporters. But now she’s still confused about what they should do if they can’t wait for answers, if no one tells her exactly how her dad went.
The staff said they were going to be cremated here and leave with the ashes (but a family member of the victim from Xinjiang pulled the body away next to them). They wanted to take Dad away too. The staff wouldn’t let the families contact each other, and when she saw the family next door crying, she ran over to see them and cried along. The staff immediately followed and told her to talk to us if she had anything to do.
The father was born in October 1969 and was 52 years old. Four or five years ago, since he worked after the restructuring of the enterprise, he led an early retirement, began to take the marathon as his career, every day will run around the village near the county, but also went to Guangzhou, Fujian, running through many places. Xiao Lu said that his father had won many awards and had about a dozen medals hanging in his room. Run for a long time, also senior, this year’s New Year’s Eve also took a group of running friends to run in the county’s parks.
She did not like to exercise, sometimes asked her father why he ran the marathon, he always said, to exercise ah! She has the impression that her father has many muscles, loves to maintain health, likes to soak his feet at night and go to bed at ten o’clock sharp. Every time he finished a race, he would call his mother: How many places did I take again!
“We just wanted an answer. “Xiao Lu said.
10:00 Guo Jian at the airport hotel
In the morning, we meet Guo Jian in his hotel room. He has an inch haircut, wears a pair of black-framed glasses, has dark skin and doesn’t smile. Born in 1992, Guo Jian previously worked as an operator in an Internet company, and in 2019, when he was introduced by a friend to cross-country racing for the first time, along with his love of photography, he swapped his job for the overlap of his two hobbies.
His video became a precious field recording material overnight. Some netizens lamented that it was the last image of Liang Jing.
When talking about the event, Guo Jian was always emotionally calm. Only, he has not been able to understand, “What exactly happened between CP2 and CP3? “
11:00 Scenic area open, tourists hit the card
In the morning, the Yellow River rock forest scenic area, the sun shines again. The parking lot at the entrance of the scenic area, the gravel emits hot air, and two Ningxia tourist buses are parked. A tour group from Shanghai followed their guide to what was originally the departure point for the participants – Nanshan Square. They were touring around the six cities of Gansu, along the Yellow River, from Zhongwei to Baiyin. The tourists punched their cards and took pictures.
The tour guide said that the tour group originally intended to reschedule today and came last night when it was determined that they could come. She was not worried, “that is extreme weather well, and we do not go off-road. “
A scenic driver said, “the scenic area are secretly open, no announcement, which can issue an announcement, just out of such a big deal. “
But after all, there are many people counting on tourists to make a living. This scenic spot was built in 2000. Inside, there is a village of five hundred families and three thousand people called Longwan Village. The buildings are the white bungalows common in the northwest. A villager told us that they have too little land here, like he only has nine cents of land, less than one mu, and more people have only three or four mu of land, they started to plant Fuji apple trees in the past few years, fruit farmers to collect, a good harvest, then earn 20,000 to 30,000 a year, but also some corn seedlings just planted. Before they planted corn, they could only earn two or three thousand dollars a year.
Many villagers are in the scenic area part-time electric car drivers, bus drivers, open farm caravans. But open farm carnival is also not profitable. A farmhouse owner said that the epidemic in the past two years, the guests are much less, “and they do not spend”.
As the signature activity of the scenic spot, “the marathon will more or less bring some traffic”. Huang Guanjun just the day before to the village, in the next door to the four sea back to the Bin farmhouse ate lunch, ordered a plate of spicy and sour meat, fried two dishes.
15:00 Hospital
Jingtai County People’s Hospital, the fifth floor of the surgical building, orthopedic ward, a notice “during the epidemic, strictly forbidden to visit” is posted on the door. A patient on the same floor said that the day before he was free to go in, but today, for some reason, he suddenly became nervous. He didn’t know that four injured people from the cross-country race had just been treated here.
Baiyin City First People’s Hospital, outside the ICU ward on the fifth floor of the inpatient department, there were many family members sitting and lying on the floor and chairs. They said that there is indeed a runner injured running cross-country inside the ICU, but not allowed to go in, visitation to ring the doorbell, recording.
The nurse at the desk on the fifth floor said that there was another runner in the general ward on the sixth floor. The sixth floor is the cardiovascular unit. The janitor on the sixth floor said that the injured person was on the seventh floor. The nurse on the seventh floor said that she had not heard of it at all, no. The housekeeper on the seventh floor said that the contestants, ah, were sent to Jingtai County.
Go home
Chen Hui landed in Shenzhen, but he is still very upset. Before, his wife has not supported him to participate in cross-country running, think dangerous, this time directly issued an “order”, no more running. He said he recognized the reality, after running the city marathon on, those dangerous races, he probably will not participate.
Until now, Chen Hui how can not figure out, like Liang Jing such a god why to participate in such an unknown competition? Even the points are not available, and the improvement for individuals in the field of cross-country running is very limited. He was silent for a few seconds and repeated three times, “It’s too bad”. He said that the few people who ran the best race will never come back.
