Russian, Chinese and Korean flights continue to fly over Belarus today. Previously, Air France, KLM, Lufthansa and SIA suspended the use of Belarusian airspace following the interception of Ryanair flights in Minsk and the arrest of opposition passengers. Brussels has also closed EU airspace to Belarus.
According to the FlightRadar24 website, a number of aircraft still flew over Belarus this Tuesday morning, such as Aeroflot to the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, a long-haul Chinese flight, and a Korean Air cargo flight to Vienna.
On Monday Air France, KLM and Finnair announced the suspension of flights over Belarus in accordance with the EU recommendations. Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) and Air Baltic also made the same decision on Monday. London and Kiev, for their part, blacklisted the former Soviet republic’s airspace.
The European Union on Monday adopted new sanctions decisions against the Lukashenko regime in Belarus, including the closure of the EU’s airspace to Belarus.
Lukashenko’s regime is accused of intercepting an Irish Ryanair passenger plane with a false bomb threat and diverting it to land in Minsk to arrest a dissident on board, and the EU demanded that Minsk immediately release the dissident.
