Recently, a video titled “My Day at Beida High School” rushed onto the hot search, in which high school students at Beida High School attend classes at eight o’clock, with courses of their choice and special activities such as fencing and drama after school, and the relaxed quality education has sparked an online discussion on the uneven distribution of educational and even social resources. Is quality education producing socially responsible aspirants or sophisticated egoists? In this war of words between the students of Qingbei High School and the “small town question makers”, the answer is forthcoming.
The first class started at eight in the morning, physical education classes have fencing projects, noon can choose entertainment or lunch break, after school at 5:30 p.m. can watch the theater performance, but also no homework, the annual basketball tournament, the dance festival and other large activities have everything, “my day in the North University Annex” video, immediately rushed on the hot search, sparked controversy. Netizens have expressed envy, leaving messages saying that this is more exciting than college, they lost at the starting line. In contrast, a day in the life of ordinary people in high school is “Hengshui mode”, “small town problem solver” daily. Even in the college entrance examination to achieve good results, but due to geographical restrictions and the number of requirements, can not be admitted to prestigious universities. Some netizens lamented, “We are dark every day, people are smiling and laughing, in the end, it is not as good as others.”
The video shows the disparity of the world and once again ignites a national debate on the unfair distribution of educational resources.
However, Wang Jian, a senior media personality in the United States, said that education is only one of the links in the social divide caused by the unfairness of the social system: “First of all, there are not enough resources for education, because the government is unwilling to invest. In the case of insufficient resources, everyone competes for quality education resources, and those with power and money are the winners in this competition, while ordinary people are always the losers. This has nothing to do with the way of education, which must be reformed institutionally, but China does not see the possibility of carrying out reforms.”
Data released by China’s Ministry of Education for the 2020 college entrance exam shows that Beijing topped the country with a 45.68 percent first-class rate, while Henan, a large province with only one 211 university, had a first-class rate of only 11.48 percent, with only 11 people per 100 getting into a college or university, a gap that is obvious. One netizen said, “The probability of a child born in Beijing getting into Peking University and Tsinghua is many times higher than mine, and I don’t know how to face such a huge injustice.” In the face of public accusations, Beijing students have come forward to accuse the public of being “sour dogs” and “envious and jealous”.
Meanwhile, a blogger bragged about knowing the sister of an international class at Tsinghua High School who had the privilege of going to Tsinghua because of her dual citizenship, and said she had learned to be kind in a privileged environment. She wrote: “write here, my condescension has been all embodied”, the town do questions home “really make me sick”. Netizens have expressed their speechlessness about this.
Cheng Fangping, an education expert from Renmin University of China, said in an interview with the station that although the system cannot be fundamentally changed, there is nothing inherently wrong with implementing quality education for the overall healthy development of young people: “Now civil servants with a high level of education can be admitted, which is discrimination, and we are now academicism in many things. College entrance exams as a social indicator to enter the university, but there are other things abroad, social labor, awareness of their potential and social evaluation, but our social evaluation as soon as we do it becomes power rent-seeking.”
Cheng Fangping believes that Peking University High School, as the top key middle school in the country, is indisputably tilted by resources to take care of. Because the supporting facilities are not in place, the promotion of the “Beida Annex” model is often counterproductive in the practice of education system reform and does not have universal significance. The real quality education is to teach according to the material, but limited by the chaotic education pattern, thousands and thousands of schools have emerged, it is difficult to promote, the education system reform is facing a lot of difficulties.
“Peking University affiliated schools, including Tsinghua affiliated schools, the original are not the best schools, but now run schools with ideals and conditions, with the halo of Peking University and Tsinghua, this experience is the least worthy of promotion. You have so many privileges and resources that others do not have, who can learn from your experience? This universal experience do not come out in key schools, the most important is the experience of mapping in weak and ordinary schools, the fundamental solution is what kind of students can be taught.”
Wang Jian believes that the reform of the education system can only solve the problems that exist in the efficiency of education, and cannot fundamentally solve the social class solidification and differentiation.
In 2017, Xiong Xuanang, the top student in Beijing’s liberal arts college entrance exam, humbly admitted in a media interview that he came from a diplomat family and took many shortcuts to college compared to rural children, drawing unanimous praise for his honesty. 2018, Yue Xin, a Peking University student, was arrested in solidarity with the “Shenzhen 7-27 rights workers’ arrests” and his whereabouts are unknown. Her whereabouts are still unknown. She had published “Confessions of a person with a vested interest in Peking University” on her public website, which was quickly harmonized because of its incisive content. In the article, she wrote that, born into a middle-class family in Beijing, “I really have no reason to go forward just for myself.”
