Pfizer, Modena and Johnson & Johnson Promise to Supply 3.5 Billion Doses of New Crown Vaccine to Poor Countries

U.S. New Crown vaccine makers Pfizer, Modena and Johnson & Johnson said Friday at the Group of 20 (G20) health summit that they will supply a combined total of about 3.5 billion doses of the vaccine to poorer countries this year and next, selling it at cost or at a discount.

Pfizer will ship 2 billion doses of the new crown vaccine to those countries in the next 18 months, with 1 billion of those doses to be delivered this year, the chairman and chief executive of U.S. pharmaceutical giant Pfizer said at the meeting, AFP and Central News Agency reported.

Modena CEO Bancel announced that “up to 95 million doses” of the vaccine will be shipped to poorer countries this year and “up to 900 million doses” will be supplied next year, including the portion to be delivered through the Global Access Facility for New Crown Vaccine.

Johnson & Johnson Vice Chairman and Chief Scientific Officer Stowers said they had previously signed an agreement with the New Crown Vaccine Global Access Facility to supply up to 200 million doses of vaccine this year, and are currently discussing “a possible additional 300 million doses…up to a total of 500 million doses.

At the opening of the summit earlier Friday, the European Union also pledged to donate 100 million doses of vaccines to poorer countries.
