Hong Kong People Apply for Residency in the UK, China Threatens Not to Recognize BNOs

The British announced that from January 30, 2021, Hong Kong people will be able to apply for residency in the UK using the BNO (British National Overseas Passport), and it is estimated that up to over one million Hong Kong people will move to the UK within five years.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian responded: “Due to the UK’s prior breach of its commitment, China will consider not recognizing the BNO passport as a valid travel document and reserves the right to take further measures.”

A netizen asked : “Who would use BNO to travel to the mainland?”

As a matter of fact, Hong Kong people use the Home Return Permit to travel to the mainland and the Hong Kong Identity Card to enter or leave Hong Kong.
