The Free Democratic Party of Germany (FDP) voted at its national congress on Sunday to remove the “one-China policy” from its election platform. The party accused China of using this as a pretext to threaten force against Taiwan. Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the decision. Currently, the FDP is discussing with cross-party members of the German parliament with a view to pushing for the complete abolition of the “one-China policy” in Germany. (By Wu Yitong/Cheng Wen)
Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Ou Jiang’an said Wednesday (19) that the German Free Democratic Party voted to remove content related to the “One China” policy before Germany’s September elections, a friendly and groundbreaking move. The removal of the “One China” policy affirms Taiwan’s democracy and supports the freedom of the Taiwanese people to choose their own political future.
Qian Yuejun, a German law scholar and commentator, told the station that Germany’s China policy, like that of many Western democracies, has experienced a long period of misjudgment toward China. The Chinese Communist Party has become increasingly reckless on the Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Taiwan issues, even during the 2019 visit to Beijing of Christian Lindner, the leader of the “Liberal Democratic Party”, who was scolded by Chinese officials for 30 minutes for meeting with Hong Kong democrats first. Qian said that the German election will be held in September this year, the German parties tend to play a tough card against the Chinese Communist Party.
Qian said: The original policy of the Free Democratic Party of Germany towards China is to strengthen Sino-German economic relations and achieve a win-win situation. Unexpectedly, his priority visit to the opposition party in Hong Kong was met with accusations and humiliation from the Chinese side, which made the German Free Democratic Party see the evil nature of the Chinese Communist Party and completely changed its policy towards China from promoting economic freedom towards China to promoting political freedom in China since then. Seeing the political misery of Hong Kong, Taiwan must never be allowed to become a second Hong Kong.
Taiwan’s ambassador to Germany, Hsieh Chih-Wei, pointed out to the station that since the lifting of martial law in Taiwan in 1987, Taiwan has moved towards democracy and has become a beacon of democracy in Chinese democratic society.
Xie Zhiwei said: The German FDP has made it clear that China’s abuse of the “One China policy” to threaten Hong Kong, the Uyghurs and Taiwan is unacceptable to them. They call for the people of Taiwan to decide their own political future, in fact, and the free world is shouting, if we really support Taiwan’s freedom and democracy, he does not necessarily recognize Taiwan as a country, at least we can not let China in the name of the “one-China policy”, intimidation and threats and even invasion of Taiwan; do not dance with the Chinese Communist Party, this The “one-China policy” is an outdated product, now it should be the “one-China policy” plus the “one-country policy”.
The “one-China policy” is an outdated product, and now it should be the “one-China policy” plus the “one-China policy”. Hsieh also revealed to the station that the “Liberal Democratic Party” members are also pushing the motion in the German Federal Parliament.
I know they are in conflict with people outside of the LDP, with the Green Party, and with the CDP. I know that they are discussing with people outside the LDP, the Green Party, and the CDU party in the Diet, and I hope that we can also discuss it around the world. It gives them an excuse to threaten and intimidate Taiwan.

A motion passed by the German Liberal Democratic Party at its national party congress on Sunday called for the deletion of the “One China Policy” from its election platform, arguing that the language is misleading and could be used by Chinese Communist Party leaders as an excuse to suppress Hong Kong democrats, commit genocide against Xinjiang Uighurs and other minorities, and threaten to occupy Taiwan by force. The motion also calls for the publication of the “Self-determination” motion in the “Self-determination” section. The motion also calls for the inclusion in the LDP’s election platform of the words “The German Liberal Democratic Party supports the democratic process and the rule of law in Taiwan, which is in sharp contrast to China’s authoritarian dictatorship” and “Strongly condemns China’s threat of force against Taiwan. The party congress also passed a motion.
The party congress also passed a motion supporting Taiwan’s participation in international organizations without the need to be recognized as a country, and suggested that Germany and the European Union expand their cooperation with Taiwan in the areas of economy, science and technology, and civil society.
“Markus Loening, a member of the FDP and former human rights commissioner of the German federal government, told the station that the FDP’s move shows a recognition and support for Taiwan’s democracy. This is also the trend, after the spread of the new epidemic around the world, there is a good consensus and direction that countries should realize that they should establish friendly relations with democratic Taiwan instead of dictatorial China.
In an earlier interview with Reuters, German FDP spokesman Bijan Djir-Sarai said that the German FDP has learned from the developments in Hong Kong, not to have Taiwan recognized as an independent state, but to send a clear message to Beijing that violations of international law will not go without consequences when it comes to Hong Kong.
The United Nations introduced the “One China” resolution 2758 in 1971. Although this policy was a product of the Cold War, the German government, like the United States, adheres to the “One China” policy at the official level.
The Free Democratic Party of Germany (FDP) was founded in 1948, and according to the latest polls, the FDP now has a 12 percent support rating and may have a chance to enter the governing coalition after the election.
