New York State Attorney General Letitia James’ office, which has been investigating whether the Trump Organization misrepresented the value of real estate to obtain loans and obtain financial and tax benefits, said Tuesday that the investigation is no longer purely civil in nature. Former U.S. President Donald Trump slammed it Wednesday, saying he was “unfairly attacked and abused. Trump also slammed the New York State prosecutors’ criminal investigation of his family business as a “desperate search for crime” and a very corrupt affair.
According to Reuters, former President Donald Trump’s family business is under criminal investigation by the New York State Attorney General, which Trump slammed on Wednesday, claiming that “there is nothing more corrupt than an investigation that is desperately looking for a crime,” Trump said in a statement, adding, “We will overcome “any attempt to prosecute.”
New York State Attorney General Letitia James’ office, which has been investigating whether the Trump Organization misrepresented the value of real estate to obtain loans and gain financial and tax benefits, said Tuesday that the investigation is no longer purely civil in nature. In a statement, Fabien Levy, a spokesman for the attorney general’s office, said, “Along with the Manhattan district attorney, we are now actively investigating the Trump Organization for criminal conduct.”
Trump on Wednesday slammed the investigation as politically motivated.
The Republican former president said, “The New York attorney general basically knew nothing about me and has already started promoting the prosecution of Trump.”
New York State Attorney General Letitia James is a Democrat, Reuters said.
Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance has been investigating Trump’s business dealings before he became president for more than two years.
In addition, the New York Times reported later Wednesday that the New York State Attorney General’s Office has been conducting a criminal investigation into the tax affairs of Trump Group Treasurer Allen Weisselberg for several months, and that the Trump Group was informed of the investigation in a letter in January. The newspaper noted that investigators have examined whether Trump filed tax returns for extra benefits paid to Weisselberg, which included multiple cars and tens of thousands of dollars in private school tuition for at least one of Weisselberg’s grandchildren.
