HKU Council Requests Investigation of Backgrounds of Two Mainland Scholars, Postpones Vote on Vice President Candidates

Controversy has arisen over the recommendation of two Tsinghua University scholars to be HKU Vice Chancellor, with University Councilor (Undergraduate Representative) Li Tze-cheng requesting that the vote be postponed to allow proper due diligence to be conducted on the two candidates. One of the candidates is said to be a member of the Chinese Communist Party, the source said.

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) Council member (undergraduate representative), Li Tze-cheng, asked for a delay in the vote while proper due diligence is conducted on the two candidates, as the documents received last week did not allow the Council to fully understand the situation. The investigation should include the full background of the candidates, as well as any faults the search committee may have made earlier in the process. The university’s first two candidates were selected by the selection committee, and the second candidate was selected by the university’s Academic Affairs Committee.

The two candidates include Shen Zuojun, Dean of the Department of Industrial Engineering at Tsinghua University, who will serve as Vice-President (Research), and Gong Peng, Dean of the Department of Earth System Science, who will take over as Vice-President (Academic Development). The appointments will be approved by the University Council at its meeting next Tuesday (27th), and the two will take office in January next year at the earliest for a 5-year term.

The reporters checked the Tsinghua University website and found that it had been censored. Before Friday, the website records showed that Shen Zuojun’s name appeared in the “Party and Government Structure” column under “Department Party Committee Team” and “Department Administration Team”, but on Friday, his name was suddenly changed to “Department Administration Team”, which means that he is the chair of the department and was also a member of the Party Committee of the department.
