Former Hong Kong pan-democratic lawmaker Rudolph Chu Kai-dee announced Thursday that he will no longer participate in politics after being detained by authorities on suspicion of violating the National Security Law.
He said on social media platform Facebook that he is currently tied up in six criminal cases, including “subversion of state power” under the National Security Law, and may not be able to get free for a long time, and he will not participate in politics again after that. He also revealed that he decided to end the “Juketi New Territories West team” after asking its members for their opinions. The team was established after he was elected to the Legislative Council in 2016, when he was elected to New Territories West with more than 84,000 votes, making him the “vote winner” in the district direct election.
In January, police arrested dozens of people, including Chu Kai-dee, who had participated in last year’s Legislative Council pan-democratic primary election, and then accused them of “conspiring to subvert state power” by gaining control of the Legislative Council and refusing to pass the government budget, eventually forcing the Chief Executive to resign.
