New F-35B Squadron Established for U.S. Forces in Japan in Rapid Response to Regional Changes

In response to the rise of China and its ambitions to expand abroad, the United States has recently made strategic adjustments around the world; the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) announced on October 23 that a new F-35B squadron has been established at Iwakuni Base in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, the second F-35B squadron to be deployed by the United States in the Indo-Pacific region.

The USMC officially announced the formation of the F-35B squadron on Oct. 23, and the squadron has been renamed the 242nd Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA-242), which is the second F-35B squadron deployed in the Indo-Pacific region.

Brig. Gen. Chris McPhillips, commander of the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, said the F-35B gives the U.S. military the ability to take control of sea and airspace, and is an expeditionary base to spearhead the fleet and joint forces. A military response from here is faster than anywhere else in the world and demonstrates U.S. commitment to Japan and to the region.”

VMFA-242, the second U.S. F-35B squadron to be deployed in the Indo-Pacific region, is not yet known when it will be completed.
