University Student Association of Hong Kong Calls for Postponement of Vice President’s Appointment

The University Council of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) will deliberate Tuesday (27) on the appointment of two Tsinghua-educated individuals, Shen Zuojun and Gong Peng, as HKU’s Vice President (Research) and Vice President (Academic Development), respectively. The University of Hong Kong Students’ Union and several civic groups held a press conference on Monday afternoon, calling for the postponement of the appointment of Vice Chancellor Gong Peng.

The student union put forward three major demands: delay the appointment of the vice president, make public the names of the selection committee, and Shen Zuozun’s political declaration. President Zhi-Lin Ye criticized the selection committee, several people, are close friends of President Zhang Xiang, questioning the black box operation. A number of civil society groups and District Council members also issued a joint statement, criticizing the placement of Chinese Communist Party members at the University of Hong Kong will affect the “one country, two systems”, and urging the University Council to veto the appointment of the two individuals.
