Mainland Chinese rights lawyer Jiang Tianyong has been placed under house arrest in his hometown in Henan province after completing his sentence. Jiang, who celebrated his 50th birthday on Wednesday, is still separated from his family and cannot be reunited. For the past two years, Jiang has been closely monitored by authorities, and recently a citizen was even criminally detained for visiting him.
In December 2016, Jiang was placed under residential surveillance after visiting a lawyer arrested in the 709 arrests in Changsha, Hunan Province, and was later charged with inciting subversion of state power and sentenced to two years in prison and three years of deprivation of political rights.
After Jiang’s release in 2019, lawyer Ren Quanniu visited him in his hometown in Luoshan, Henan Province. The company’s main business is to provide a wide range of products and services.

Wednesday (19) was Jiang Tianyong’s 50th birthday. Some citizens launched an online campaign to congratulate Jiang Tianyong, and even made a short video to wish him a happy birthday. Democracy activists from all walks of life have sent their best wishes to Jiang Tianyong.
Jiang Tianyong’s wife, Jin Zailing, who is currently in the United States, tweeted that she had not spent her birthday with her husband for eight years and hoped that Jiang Tianyong would be free soon and that she would be able to cut a piece of cake for him.
Last month, Henan rights activist Xing Wangli went to Luoshan to visit Jiang Tianyong in person. His son, Xing Jian, told the station that his father was intimidated by the authorities after he returned to Xixian.
Xing Jian: “My father went to visit lawyer Jiang on April 20, and on April 23, the chief and deputy chief of Huaihe police station tricked my parents into going to the neighborhood committee and threatened my father that he should not visit lawyer Jiang, saying that my father would have to fix him if he was not honest, and then in the afternoon my father left and went to Beijing.”
Xing Wangli was taken away by police officers at the police station in Beijing, and was then administratively detained by the Xixian police on suspicion of provocation and nuisance, and then turned into criminal detention.
