Taiwan declared the entire territory into the epidemic level 3 alert

As new cases of crown pneumonia continue to emerge in several counties and cities in Taiwan, the Central Epidemic Command Center announced that the Taiwan-wide epidemic alert was raised to level 3.

According to the latest epidemic situation announced by Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Center on May 19, Taiwan added 275 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 that day, including 267 local cases and 8 cases imported from outside the country. Taiwan has been infected with more than 100 cases for five consecutive days.

Taiwan’s Epidemic Command Center issued a press release on Wednesday (May 19), Taiwan’s Minister of Health and Commander of the Central Epidemic Command Center Chen Shih-chung announced that day, from now until May 28, to raise the “national epidemic alert to level 3”.

Previously, the cities of Taipei and Xinbei, where new cases of the new crown are concentrated, were put under Level 3 alert control measures on May 15.

Chen urged the people of Taiwan to continue to follow and cooperate with the existing Level 3 alert control measures and work together with the government to guard the community.

According to the Taiwan Central Epidemic Command Center’s epidemic alert criteria and responses, if there are more than three community clusters in a week or if more than 10 local cases of unknown origin are confirmed in a day, then the city is on Alert 3.

Alert Level 3 means that everyone must wear a mask at all times when going outside, and limit indoor gatherings to 5 people and outdoor gatherings to 10 people. All kinds of businesses and public places will be closed except for essential services, police departments, hospitals and government buildings.

In those businesses and public institutions that remain open, crowd control, masks and social distancing will be required. Workplaces must comply with epidemic prevention requirements, implement personal and workplace hygiene management, and initiate corporate emergency measures such as home working and flexible working hours.

Individuals who violate the Level 3 epidemic alert by going out without masks will be fined between NT$3,000 (approximately US$100) and NT$15,000 in accordance with the Communicable Disease Control Act. Those who violate the ban on large gatherings and religious activities, or enter places that should be closed, will be fined NT$60,000 to NT$300,000.

Taiwan’s entry into epidemic alert level 3 marks the first time since the New Coronavirus pandemic that Taiwan has issued a level 3 alert throughout its territory.
