At least seven people were killed and more than 70 injured in a powerful bomb blast at an Islamic seminary in northwestern Pakistan Tuesday morning (Oct. 27).
Police said an improvised explosive device exploded during morning classes at the packed seminary in the city of Peshawar.
Cell phone footage shows a cleric teaching verses from the Quran when the bomb exploded at Jamia Zubairia seminary.
Senior police officer Mansoor Aman told reporters that the explosive device was hidden in a bag, which someone had left inside the seminary.
Witnesses and rescuers said that most of the victims were young children. No group has claimed responsibility for the deadly blast.
Hospital officials expect the death toll to rise.
Peshawar, the capital of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan, has for years been the site of attacks by the outlawed Pakistani group the Taliban.
However, a sustained crackdown on the group by Pakistani security forces has significantly reduced the violence over the past few years.
