Challenges Lamborghini to spend 1.5 billion euros to electrify all cars after 2025

CEO Stephan Winkelmann said that purely electric cars will not be launched until after 2025.

Italian sports car manufacturer Lamborghini today announced a 1.5 billion euro (NT$51.2 billion) investment in an electric car program, risking the disappointment of sports car fans by joining the global effort to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Lamborghini, a subsidiary of German auto giant Volkswagen, said it will launch its first complex-powered series of cars in 2023 and that the entire range will be “electrified” by the end of 2024.

But Lamborghini says it will not launch an all-electric model until after 2025. In a statement, CEO Stephan Winkelmann said the plan was “necessary in a rapidly changing world”.

He also said that “by continuing to reduce our impact on the environment, we want to make a contribution” and called it the largest investment in electrification the company has ever made.

Lamborghini believes it can cut its carbon emissions in half by 2025. As the development of electric vehicles becomes a global trend, sports car manufacturers face a tougher challenge than mass-market producers.

Some speculate that Lamborghini fans may not be able to accept the different torque and driving experience of an electric vehicle compared to a traditional internal combustion engine.
