The Global Times used the mouth of so-called “netizens” on the island to ridicule Taiwan for buying vaccines from the U.S., which was met with displeasure by netizens on the mainland, who asked a one-sided question in return. (Web screenshot)
On the 17th, U.S. President Joe Biden announced that another 20 million doses of vaccines would be released to countries overseas to combat the epidemic. The Chinese Communist Party’s Global Times used the words of “netizens” to mock the announcement, which was met with displeasure by mainland netizens who asked, “‘Netizens? ‘? Or you?” “‘Netizen’ is not omnipotent”.
17 U.S. President Joe Biden promised to get the official certification to use the three vaccines, including Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson (Johnson & Johnson) vaccine supply overseas countries to fight the disease by the end of June.
The U.S. has not yet announced the details of the beneficiary countries, and Taiwan’s representative in the U.S., Xiao Meiqin, responded to media inquiries by saying that she has expressed her willingness to the U.S. side.
It is reported that the Ministry of Health and Welfare is responsible for Taiwan’s domestic vaccine procurement, and Hsiao Mei-chin is helping to speed up the U.S. response to Taiwan’s needs. 14 Hsiao Mei-chin disclosed that Taiwan has ordered two batches of vaccines from the U.S., of which AstraZeneca has already sent a small amount to Taiwan and Modena vaccine is expected to be delivered in June, and the goal now is to get these vaccines to arrive on time.
In reporting the news, the Chinese Communist Party’s Global Times used the mouth of “netizens” on the island to make sarcastic remarks: “Some netizens sarcastically said that Xiao Meiqin ‘cheats God and ghosts’; ‘There are vaccines from the mainland, but you don’t want them. You don’t want it, keep fooling the Taiwanese people.'”
“Some netizens are more sober: ‘After talking for half a day …… is empty-handed, nothing!’ ‘Only afraid that the bamboo basket is empty.'”
“A netizen said, ‘This is like going to the beggar’s bowl to grab rice to eat, with Taiwan’s loyalty to the United States, the United States should have taken the initiative to allocate to Taiwan long ago! ‘Whether Taiwan-US relations are good or bad depends on this one.'”
However, mainland Sina.com readers did not buy the Global Times’ comments. At a time when the Chinese Communist Party is comprehensively monitoring online public opinion and the Internet is flooded with 50 cents everywhere, netizens left one-sided comments countering the Global Times’ remarks, including the top five popular follow-up posts.
The top follow-up post had 439 netizens strongly supporting: “Don’t keep talking about ‘netizens’, but have a bottom in your own mind.”
There are 406 Sina questioning the rhetorical question, “‘netizens’? Or you?”
355 Sina users asked, “Which ‘net friend’?”
Another 23 Sina users responded, “‘Netizen’ is not omnipotent.”
Taiwan Land Commission: No need to pretend to be nice on the other side
One of the reasons for the dispute between the two sides of the vaccine is that Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the Communist Party of China, claimed on the evening of the 17th that the recent epidemic in Taiwan was serious and that the mainland side was willing to do its best to help the general public in Taiwan overcome the epidemic as soon as possible, and that the most urgent task was to “remove artificial political barriers” so that people could have the vaccine available.
Taiwan’s Land Commission responded in writing that night that “the other side of the Taiwan Strait does not have to be fake nice” and that as long as the mainland authorities do not obstruct, “we can obtain more reliable vaccines from the international community more quickly”.
The ROC also reminded the Taiwan Affairs Office that it should not be misunderstood and that the few opinions catering to the propaganda of the mainland side cannot represent the people of Taiwan. Even the Land Commission also said that if the Chinese Communist Party is really thinking of the common people, it should stop military aircraft from disturbing Taiwan and let Taiwan focus on fighting the epidemic, which is the blessing of the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry: assisting friendly countries and Taiwan to procure international vaccines without crowding each other out
On the vaccine in Taiwan’s internal concerns, 18 afternoon Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Ou Jiangan said that Taiwan and the United States last March 18 jointly issued the “Taiwan-US Epidemic Prevention Partnership Joint Statement”, showing the determination of Taiwan and the United States to work together to combat the epidemic. At present, they are working together with the U.S. Representative Office to ensure that Taiwan can successfully obtain the required vaccines.
According to the Central News Agency, she made it clear that assisting friendly countries in obtaining vaccines and Taiwan’s efforts to procure high-quality international vaccines are not mutually exclusive and in no way affect the right of the people of Taiwan to receive effective vaccines.
She also stressed that “the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates that vaccines should not be used as a tool for political manipulation and opposes attempts by any country to use the vaccine issue to undermine Taiwan’s friendship with friendly countries and to diminish the energy of domestic unity against the epidemic.”
