Poll: Most Americans Don’t Trust Communist China to Help Fight Climate Change

A new poll shows that a majority of Americans do not trust the Chinese Communist Party to help fight climate change, and that distrust of the Chinese Communist Party in general has deepened.

A Yahoo News poll conducted in conjunction with YouGov shows that only 15 percent of U.S. adults over the age of 18 said in the poll that they believe “China can be trusted to help fight climate change,” while 57 percent said the Communist Party cannot be trusted and 28 percent said they were unsure.

Despite this lack of trust in the Chinese Communist Party on climate change issues, most U.S. respondents said the United States should pursue aggressive strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In response to the question, “Should the U.S. set ambitious climate change governance goals regardless of what the CCP does,” 51% of respondents said yes, 29% said no, and 20% were unsure. Among those who answered no, 56 percent were Republicans, only 9 percent were Democrats and 32 percent were non-partisan.

The survey also found that distrust of the Chinese Communist Party has deepened, with 79 percent of Republicans saying they cannot trust the Communist Party, compared to 47 percent of Democrats and 60 percent of independents.

In response to the question, “Do you agree or disagree with President Biden’s approach to climate change,” 24% of respondents “strongly agree”; 21% “somewhat agree “; 11 percent said they “somewhat disagreed”; and 26 percent said they “strongly disagreed.”
