Poll: Biden’s approval rating in May fell to 47.5% below the average approval rating of previous presidents

The Breitbart News reported on May 17 that a poll conducted by Trafalgar Group showed that Biden’s approval rating had dropped to 47.5 percent, having shrunk by 9.5 percent since April, when a Gallup poll put Biden at 57 percent.

The Trafalgar Group, the Atlanta, Jo.-based polling firm that tends to conduct polls, successfully predicted the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.

According to Gallup polling, the average approval rating for presidents in the first quarter of their terms is 61 percent, and the overall average approval rating for presidents from 1938 to 2021 is 53 percent.

The Trafalgar Group’s May poll shows Biden trailing Gallup’s average approval rating for presidents across all sectors, by 5.5 percentage points, and trailing the average approval rating for presidents across all sectors in their first quarter, by 13.5 percentage points.

538 (FiveThirtyEight), a blog focused on polling analysis, rates pollsters “by analyzing the historical accuracy of each pollster’s polling and polling methodology” and gives Trafalgar Group an A- and Gallup a B+ in the 538 blog’s ratings.

The Trafalgar Group poll was conducted from April 30 to May 6 and surveyed 1,571 likely voters who voted in the primary or general election. The margin of error was 2.47 percent. The poll has a 95% confidence level.
