Recently, Beijing’s out-of-school training institutions have been frequently punished. The latest news is that New Oriental and Xue Ruisi have been named by the Communist Party’s Beijing Education Bureau.
Late on May 17, the Communist Party’s Beijing Municipal Education Bureau’s public WeChat number Capital Education issued a notice saying that some off-campus training institutions in Beijing have violated the law.
Among them, eight training institutions, including the new Beijing Dongcheng District Private New Oriental School Guangqumen Teaching Point, Beijing Dongcheng District Xuelisi Training School Dongsi Second Teaching Point, and Beijing Chaoyang District Global IELTS Training School, were accused of charging a one-time or disguised fee of more than three months or 60 class hours.
Five training institutions, including Xueda Education Training School in Chaoyang District, Beijing and Giant Culture and Art Training School (Baisifang Campus) in Xicheng District, Beijing, were accused of inappropriate advertising such as low-price marketing and anxiety trafficking.
Three training institutions, including Private New Oriental School in Haidian District, Beijing, and Private New Oriental School in Chaoyang District, Beijing, were accused of teaching content that exceeded the corresponding national curriculum standards.
Seven training institutions, including Global Education Training School in Dongcheng District, Beijing, Eastern Golden Tower Children’s Potential Training School in Chaoyang District, Beijing, and Beijing Erwai Overseas Education Training Center, were accused of resuming offline courses without permission. Three training institutions, including Xue Ruisi Training School Dongsi Second Teaching Point in Dongcheng District, Beijing, were accused of ending their training later than 8:30 p.m.
On April 25 this year, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Market Supervision fined four off-campus education and training institutions, Xue Ruisi, New Oriental Online, Gaosi, and Who Learn, respectively, a warning and a top fine of 500,000 yuan (RMB, same below) for having price violations. Subsequently, on May 10, two out-of-school education and training institutions, Homework Help and Saru Tutoring, were also given warnings and top fines of RMB 2.5 million.
On March 10, shares of New Oriental, Good Future and Who Learn plummeted, with the three education giants’ combined market value evaporating by tens of billions of yuan.
