The outbreak of Wuhan pneumonia (novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19) continues to affect the world, and by today, Japan has had more than 6,000 confirmed cases for five consecutive days. According to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the number of new infections in 22 prefectures in the past week has reached the “fourth stage” representing the outbreak’s expansion.
According to Kyodo News, the number of new infections per 100,000 people in the last week is 69.9 per 100,000 people in Osaka, far exceeding the standard of 25 for the fourth stage, 67.3 in Fukuoka, 61.5 in Hokkaido and 58 in Okayama. Compared to last week, the number of cases in nine prefectures – Hokkaido, Gifu, Shizuoka, Tottori, Shimane, Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, Kagawa and Kumamoto – has more than doubled.
Japan’s “Declaration of Emergency” on the 16th added Hokkaido, Okayama and Hiroshima, a total of 9 prefectures, and “priority measures to prevent the spread” added Gunma, Ishikawa and Kumamoto 3 lines, a total of 10 prefectures. In addition to the two implementation targets, the number of people infected in areas such as Kansai has also reached the fourth stage.
At present, 22 prefectures in Japan have the number of new infections reaching the “Stage 4” level in the last week, nearly half of the country.
