Two tornadoes hit China: death toll rises to 12

Two tornadoes have killed at least 12 people and injured more than 400 as they passed through central and eastern China.

Strong winds swept through the central Chinese metropolis of Wuhan, once the cradle of a coronavirus pandemic, on Friday night, AFP said. Authorities in Hubei province said at a news conference that the windstorm killed eight people and injured 280 others. The previous death toll announced by Wuhan authorities was six.

According to authorities, winds of up to 260 kilometers per hour caused widespread damage. The gusts caused damage to two construction cranes, one of which collapsed at a construction site.

In addition to vehicles damaged by falling objects, trees were uprooted, tin sheds were partially destroyed and power poles were knocked down, leaving more than 26,000 homes without power. According to authorities in Hubei, nearly 30 houses collapsed.

Meanwhile, in the city of Suzhou, near Shanghai, a powerful tornado also hit Friday night. Wind speeds exceeded 200 kilometers per hour, according to local authorities. One report said four people were killed, one was missing and 130 people suffered minor injuries.

A black cyclone caused huge damage, according to images posted by Chinese social networks.
