Brinken Calls on Palestinian Leader to End Rocket Attacks on Israel

Secretary of State John Blinken said today he spoke by phone with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and urged Hamas militants to stop rocket attacks from Gaza as Israeli-Palestinian tensions rise.

I spoke with President Mahmoud Abbas about the current situation in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza,” tweeted Antony Blinken. I expressed my condolences for the loss of life. I also stressed the need to end rocket attacks and reduce tensions.

State Department spokesman Ned Price added that Blinken also stated that “he believes that Palestinians and Israelis should enjoy the same freedom, dignity, security and prosperity.

Abbas stressed “the importance of ending Israeli attacks on our people everywhere, ending the attacks by settlers, and ending aggressive Israeli measures against our people,” according to a transcript of the dialogue with the Palestinian autonomous government.
