Committee on Dangerous China Letter to Biden: CIA Director Must Resign for Working with Communist China and Lying in the Senate

National Pulse reports that The Committee on the Present Danger China, a national security and veterans’ group, sent a letter to Biden on Monday calling for the resignation of recently appointed CIA Director William Burns because of Burns’ ties to the Chinese Communist Party and his public lies about the issue. Burns was linked to the Chinese Communist Party and openly lied to the U.S. Senate about the issue.

As previously reported by National Pulse, Burns served as president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace before becoming CIA director, working with Chinese Communist influence groups including the China-United States Exchange Foundation (CUSEF). The relationship continued through 2021, despite the former think tank director, who insisted during his Senate confirmation hearings that ties were severed with Communist influence groups.

In its letter, the Committee on Dangerous China wrote, “It seems to us that anyone associated with the CCP should not have basic security clearance, let alone hold a sensitive position such as director of the CIA. In addition, we recently learned that Mr. Burns, in his sworn testimony to the U.S. Senate, grossly misrepresented the nature and timing of his dealings with these individuals and organizations associated with the Chinese Communist Party. “

Mr. Burns’ Senate testimony was also subverted by the fact that, in 2016, Burns welcomed Zhang Yichen to the Carnegie Foundation’s board of directors. Zhang Yichen is the chief executive officer of CITIC Capital Holdings, a subsidiary of CITIC Group, and is also a member of the Communist Party’s top united front organ, the Political Consultative Conference. In recent years, Zhang Yichen has donated more than $1 million to the endowment.

The Committee on Dangerous China argued that “Mr. Bourne’s record, which contradicts his claims that he is concerned about CCP influence, suggests that he ignores the risk of CCP influence and, at the same time, demonstrates a lack of awareness of the CCP’s tactics and judgment, a serious national security risk for the position of Director of Central Intelligence.”

For all of these reasons, the committee urged Biden, in its letter, to immediately ask Burns to resign as CIA director.

The letter was signed by more than 20 prominent individuals, including former senior administration officials, former senior intelligence community officials, and members of relevant media and think tanks.
