Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today declared a state of emergency in the central Jewish city of Lod, where police have accused Arab residents of staging a “mass riot.
AFP reported that Netanyahu made the announcement in a statement, saying that additional personnel had been sent to the area. Israeli police in the city of Lod said that “a mass riot broke out among some Arab residents, endangering the community.
Israel and the Palestinian autonomous region have seen a recent upsurge in violence, with the killing of an Arab-Israeli in Lod the day before.
“The Times of Israel reported that the decision was made after a special meeting with senior security and legal officials.
Public Security Minister Amir Ohana said he would use his authority to carry out Nitzanyahu’s order.
This is the first time Israel has used its emergency powers against the Arab community since it ended military rule over Arabs in the country in 1966.
