Republican U.S. Rep. Andy Barr of Kentucky introduced a bill over the weekend to create 56 new FBI special agent positions to investigate the Chinese Communist Party’s “espionage activities in the field of education.
Forsyth News reports that the bill is aimed at rooting out Chinese Communist “espionage” and “theft” at U.S. higher education institutions.
The FBI has an Office of Private Sector Affairs that investigates espionage at higher education institutions, but Barr’s office said the agency does not have enough resources for agents to focus on the issue.
Under the proposal, 56 new FBI agent positions would be created under the Office of Private Sector Affairs to specifically investigate and perform this task and report directly to the FBI assistant director.
If passed, the bill would direct the FBI assistant director to “investigate and report to the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation any suspected incidents of individuals participating in federally funded research at institutions of higher education and the National Academies in their capacity as agents of a foreign government,” the report said.
