The Way Back” Wins Bronze Remi Award at 54th Houston Film Festival (New Century Pictures)
The world-renowned New Century Pictures’ masterpiece “The Way Back” has won the Bronze Remi Award in the Foreign Language Film category at the Houston International Film Festival, and another award at the Brazilian Film Festival. This is the 55th festival award the film has received.
Remy Awards have a long history of influence
More than 4,500 films from 79 countries have been selected for this year’s Houston International Film Festival, which has been held for 53 years. The Houston International Film Festival was founded more than 20 years before the Sundance Film Festival, the most prestigious independent film festival in the world, making it the oldest independent film festival in the world. The annual Houston International Film Festival is an important cultural event in Houston, and it is one of the three major selection film festivals in North America, along with the San Francisco Film Festival and the New York Film Festival.
The Way Back” won the Bronze Remi Award in the Foreign Language Film category, out of a number of films that were selected. Taiwanese director Ang Lee, as well as Spielberg, George Lucas and other world-renowned directors, all received their first awards at the Houston Film Festival, which is why the festival is known as the “Birthplace of Star Directors”.
The Remi Grand Award is the highest award in the festival, including Best Director, Best Actor, and other individual awards.
The Houston Film Festival has a wide influence in the Chinese community. In previous years, the festival has often involved several film crews, creators, film-related people, sponsors and some Chinese communities in Houston from mainland China, and Chinese language films are also an important part of the festival. Many famous actors and directors in China have participated and won awards, such as Lu Chuan, Zhou Xun, Yang Mi, etc. As an overseas Chinese independent film and television creative team, New Century Films adheres to the universal values of “truth, kindness and tolerance”, and is committed to creating films that inspire people with good thoughts and dare to expose the social reality of China today. Their masterpiece “The Way Back” won the Bronze Remi Award, which is a rare achievement.
The film’s lead actress, Zheng Xuefei, says it means a lot to be recognized by industry professionals at a festival like this. “The films we have created are a true reflection of the real situation and face of the Chinese people under the Chinese Communist Party. So it’s not easy to get so many awards for our films, which are heavily blocked and suppressed by the CCP.”
She also said that in the liberal and democratic environment of the West, the Chinese Communist Party is still heavily infiltrated. Therefore, “it is very courageous that the festival has given us this award. It is more proof of the professional recognition of our film in terms of production and substance.”
Award-winning footprint covers five continents shortlisted for Tagore Film Festival Annual Selection
Not only that, it is reported that “The Way Back” then reached the quarter-finals of the 10th Latin American Art International Film Festival (LASA International Film Festival) selection! The festival’s organizer, Latin American Art Association (LASA), is located in Brazil, and the festival events are usually held in South America.
This is the first time a film from the new century has won an award in South America, and the 55th award for The Way Back. To date, “The Way Back” has won awards on five continents – North America, South America, Asia, Europe and Africa – and is therefore a milestone.
It is also worth noting that “The Way Back,” which won the Outstanding Achievement Award in the Narrative Feature Film of the Month category at the Tagore International Film Festival (TIFF) in India last November, has been confirmed as a finalist in the annual Sun Of The East Awards 2021. The festival organizer, the Gitanjali Cultural Complex, started the festival to pass on Tagore’s passion and free-thinking spirit.
Kang Kwang-woo, the film’s lead actor, said it was encouraging to hear that “After a year of anxiety caused by the communist virus epidemic, it is a unique glow in the spring to hear that “The Way Back” has won another award.”
Reminiscing again about the making of the film, Kang Kwang-woo further said, “The vitality of a great film is amazing. It will continue to move many viewers for a long time; it will continue to send the best human emotions rippling out like the ripples of a lake, and these ripples will continue to touch the hearts of more friends, thus bringing up the best memories in people’s hearts. Thus taking us back to those innocent years again, feel the beauty of those innocent!”
