“Where did the leopard go?” This seemingly joking phrase is being played out in real life.
Recently, the escape of three money leopards from Hangzhou Wildlife World has caused widespread concern in the society. At present, the hunt for the fugitive leopards is still ongoing, but the relevant details and the issues behind them deserve our attention and reflection.
As early as a few days ago, a crowd reported to the police that a suspected money leopard was found in a lodge, suspected to be an escape from the zoo, but was flatly denied by the zoo, even the subsequent announcement of the suspension of opening only said that there were security problems. The zoo apologized belatedly until the truth could not be concealed and the official hunt began, saying that because the leopard was not yet an adult and was less aggressive, the fear that the announcement of the incident would cause panic was not made public in time, so irresponsible rhetoric is undoubtedly untenable.
In recent years, there have been many incidents of conflict between large wild animals and humans. In Yunnan, there have been incidents of wild elephants breaking into villages and wreaking havoc, chasing villagers, and even trampling on them causing casualties. In the northeast, it was only last month that the northeast tiger in Jixi, Heilongjiang Province, injured a person. The Hangzhou money leopard exodus, on the other hand, brought the human-animal conflict that traditionally exists in remote areas to the forefront of developed inland areas at once. It is important to note that the escape of the leopard in Hangzhou is not an accident or an isolated case, but the underlying reason is the oversight of the management system of wildlife parks around the world.
Whether from the invasion of animals in nature reserves, or from the escape of animals from the safari park, human-animal conflict has been on the rise in recent years. Undoubtedly, with the continued improvement of the ecological environment, “wild animals on the street” and other human-animal conflict events will continue to occur, and even more frequent. How should we deal with this new issue?
It can be said that society should re-examine the contradictions and conflicts between humans and animals on the new level of understanding of the “community of life”, and the construction of related systems should be speeded up as soon as possible.
On the one hand, the fear of nature is the right thing to do. Protection of wildlife, fear of nature is a prerequisite for the harmonious coexistence of humans and animals, the whole society should further strengthen the strict protection of wildlife. Since then, China has been improving the wildlife protection law, from the institutional protection of wild animals to be guaranteed. At the same time, the whole society should also work together to reduce the destruction of nature and man-made attacks on animals, regulate their own behavior, to provide a good living environment for wild animals.
On the other hand, tightening the fence is also indispensable. A number of animal escapes and human-animal conflicts have occurred with the oversight of local management departments, and the loopholes in the relevant systems are constantly exposed. The management of nature reserves and wildlife parks and other animal gathering areas should be more professional and precise, always tighten the string of possible animal escapes, for the possible existence of loopholes in a timely manner to repair, not to bury hidden dangers. Once the relevant situation should also be announced to the community in a timely manner, to show the alarm, rather than cover up, to cover up.
But we also need to admit, from the properties of animals, the occurrence of similar events and conflicts is difficult to completely avoid, the conflict occurred after the emergency response measures are more important. For the problem of human-animal conflict, China should form a scientific and effective disposal system as soon as possible, and build a normalized emergency response mechanism, so that once an animal escape occurs, it can start responding in a timely manner, instead of being in a state of panic and disorder every time. At the same time, we also see that Beidou and other related technological means are being used to solve the human-animal conflict, providing security for the people around the wildlife habitat from many aspects.
Harmonious living between humans and animals is not a simple matter. We need to fully understand the complexity of human-animal conflict, and we need to protect both animals and human safety, and strive to create a community where all life can enjoy nature.
