UK Raises Warning Levels for Terrorist Attacks

Britain’s Home Secretary announced Tuesday that the warning level for a national terrorist threat has been raised from “real” to “serious. The announcement comes after terrorist attacks in France and Austria.

A severe warning means that a terrorist attack is highly likely, according to the UK’s Military Intelligence 5 (MI5). A severe warning is the fourth level of a five-level warning for terrorist threats in the United Kingdom.

British Home Secretary Priti Patel told reporters in London that MI5’s Joint Terrorist Analysis Centre had raised the warning level following the recent terrorist attacks in Nice and Vienna, France.

Patel said the increased warning level means people should remain vigilant, but not panic. She said the warnings are a precautionary measure, and that the public may also see British intelligence and police agencies taking obvious protective precautions across the country.

In an earlier tweet, Patel encouraged the British public to “continue to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police.”
