Breitbart News reported May 7 that former first lady Michelle Obama said on Friday’s broadcast of “CBS This Morning” that black people took to the streets to participate in the Black Lives Matter protests because they had to.
After former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of murder, the Obamas said in a joint statement that “real justice is much more important than a single verdict in a trial.”
The hosts referenced the statement on their show, and Michelle responded, “While we’re all breathing a sigh of relief over the verdict, there’s still work to be done. So we, we can’t say, ‘Great, it’s been adjudicated.’ I know people in the black community don’t feel that way because many of us still live in fear when we go to the grocery store, or walk our dogs, or allow our kids to get their driver’s licenses.”
The anchor asked, “Don’t your daughters drive?”
Michelle replied, “They drive, but every time they get in the car by themselves, I worry about what assumptions are being made by people who don’t know them. The truth is that they are good students and polite girls; but maybe their music is playing a little loud and maybe someone sees their backs and makes assumptions. I, like many parents of black kids, let my kids get their driver’s licenses while having fear in my heart.”
Michelle added, “So I think we have to talk more about these issues and we have to ask our fellow citizens to listen more and believe that we don’t want to be out there marching. I mean, all the Black Lives Matter kids, they prefer to choose not to be afraid of anything, they take to the streets because they have no choice, they have to, they’re trying to get people to understand that we are real people, that many people have fear of many of us, it’s irrational, it’s based on a very sad, very dark history, and it’s time for us to move beyond these historical issues .”
