On May 7, official media announced the resignation of Wang Xiaodong as governor of Hubei Province and the indictment of former Hubei provincial government secretary-general Be Bixiong by the Communist Party’s Jingzhou City Prosecutor’s Office.
According to the Chinese media, Bie Bixiong was charged with taking advantage of his position or the convenience of his authority or position to illegally receive or solicit property from others through the official acts of other state employees, directly or through specific relations, in an especially large amount; and abusing his power, causing significant losses to public property and state interests, and was prosecuted by the prosecution for bribery and abuse of power.
Since late 2019, an epidemic of the CCP virus (New Coronavirus) has ravaged Hubei Province, especially Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province, which is considered the source of the virus, and the official concealment has caused the epidemic to spread to an unmanageable extent, with the death toll remaining a mystery. Afterwards, during the prolonged closure of several cities, the flow of goods was hampered, bringing another wave of disaster to the people of Hubei.
At the first press conference of the Hubei government on the epidemic, Hubei Governor Wang Xiaodong did not wear a mask, Grand Secretary Beibixiong wore a mask with his nostrils exposed, and Wuhan Mayor Zhou Xianwang wore his mask backwards, making him the scene of a major car accident, which was widely mocked by the international media and ignited the already boiling public opinion in Hubei.
Afterwards, in the face of the epidemic getting out of control, there was a strange scene of local officials and the central government of the Communist Party of China shirking responsibility for each other.
The Communist Party’s viral plague also brought personnel changes to Hubei’s officialdom.
In February 2020, Ying Yong, the former mayor of Shanghai, replaced Jiang Chaoliang as secretary of the CPC Hubei Provincial Committee, while Wang Zhonglin, then secretary of the CPC Jinan Municipal Committee, replaced Ma Guoqiang as secretary of the Wuhan Municipal Committee.
Bie Bixiong, on the other hand, fell on September 4, 2020, when he was a member of the former party group and secretary general of the Hubei Provincial Government, the former secretary of the party group of provincial government organs, and the director of the General Office. He was Wang Xiaodong’s first secretary at the time.
On the same day that the news of Bie Bixiong’s indictment came, the 23rd meeting of the Standing Committee of the 13th CPC Hubei Provincial People’s Congress voted to approve Wang Xiaodong’s “request” to resign as governor of Hubei Province, while appointing Wang Zhonglin as vice governor and acting governor of Hubei Province.
The domestic media noted that Wang Zhonglin became the first secretary of the Wuhan Municipal Party Committee to be directly promoted to acting governor of Hubei Province after the 18th CPC National Congress.
