Cai Xia, a retired professor at the Central Party School of the Communist Party of China (CPC), was expelled from the party for comments critical of the authorities, and Liu Yuching, another professor at the school, recently announced his silence under pressure from netizens after praising another country’s medical welfare system. There is concern that the space for speech in China is shrinking due to human factors, and that even teachers at party schools, who are considered to be “righteous,” are not immune.
Liu Yuching is a professor and doctoral supervisor at the Party Building Department of the Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. On Monday (3), she posted an article on her real name Weibo account praising Canada’s health care welfare system. She described the system as “equal for all”, with everyone from the prime minister down to farmers receiving the same health care card.
“The people who speak have no intention, but those who listen have an intention. Some mainland netizens believe that Liu Yuching aimed to criticize the inequality of medical resources in China, and even questioned her cognitive ability, saying that she could not give lessons to officials of the CPC Central Party School, let alone improve their political judgment and execution.
Some netizens “went even further,” accusing Liu of “pandering to foreigners” and playing a “two-faced person” in “long-term ideology. “According to her photos, she was dressed in designer clothes and lived a luxurious life.
In the face of public opinion, Liu first retweeted an article titled “Let people speak, the sky will not fall” on Weibo on Thursday, and then announced that “her Weibo account will stop updating immediately and she will uninstall the Weibo software from her phone. She said, “I’m not afraid of anything, but I want to say goodbye to Weibo completely.
“Pinky’s tactics to force out Liu Yuching are reminiscent of the Cultural Revolution
Wu Qiang, a former lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Tsinghua University, believes that the tactics used by the “pinkies” to force Liu Yuzheng out are reminiscent of the Cultural Revolution.
Wu Qiang: “This new round of siege is basically the Internet version of the Cultural Revolution’s copycat, a product of the universalization of the war wolf. It is usually encouraged by the official media and official institutions, just like a conflict between the capitalist rebels and those in power, and even Hu Xijin has encountered similar attacks. The Red Guard-style war wolves are pervasively searching for the few remaining voices of justice and conscience.”
While Liu Yuching’s case is reminiscent of Cai Xia, who was expelled from the Party earlier, independent scholar Wu Zorai believes that the two cannot be compared.
Wu Zorai: “Poverty alleviation and poverty eradication are both things that Xi Jinping pursues. The people’s equality is very clear to Xi Jinping. So what the professor of the Central Party School said, did not violate the implementation of the error, and is not anti-party anti-socialism. Why would Pinky oppose this professor? Pinky is of the opinion that the professor is praising other countries and belittling China. Boasting about other countries is the same as belittling socialism, so the little pinkies rose up against it.”
Some commentators believe that many of the professors at the Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China are the second or third generation of the “rightful” red generation, and Liu Yuching’s indirect comparison of the health care and welfare systems in Canada and China, implying that there are problems with the Chinese system, is already very valuable.
Wu Jolai: “Pinky doesn’t realize that this professor is speaking for the young people, for many people at the bottom, because the professor himself already enjoys very good medical treatment. Central Party School professors generally enjoy deputy bureau level treatment well, enjoy medical blue card, priority arrangement ward, and medical all reimbursement, so this professor can speak for the people, he still has not lost his conscience, or a professor in the pursuit of justice.”
The outside world is concerned about whether Liu Yuching will choose to leave China under pressure, as Cai Xia did. Wu Jolai said
Cai Xia severely criticized the CCP’s political system, which is not allowed by the CCP, while Liu Yucheng’s comments on the medical system did not involve a political red line, and I believe she will not be subject to any disciplinary action.
