A woman surnamed Ye in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, underwent surgery at the Pingshan District Hospital last month. As the anesthesiologist was not around to look after her, the anesthetic infusion tube was blocked for a long time without circulation and no one noticed, she woke up during the surgery due to the lack of medicine, but because she could not speak, she had to endure the pain of having her abdomen cut open, which was close to despair.
The incident occurred on April 14. According to Ms. Ye’s recollection, she was under general anesthesia during the surgery and lost consciousness briefly after the injection of anesthetic drugs, but awoke suddenly shortly afterwards and was able to clearly perceive the details of the surgery and hear the doctor’s conversation.
Ms. Yeh also wrote a journal afterwards about her feelings at the time: “A huge pain came and I woke up! I felt a blade cutting my belly button …… soon I felt my belly began to fill up, internal organs pulled and stirred, followed by the lower right abdominal incision and the left abdominal incision, the electric knife slowly cut into my body, the pain and horrible touch made me feel desperate fear.”
Due to the effect of partial anesthesia and the insertion of a throat tube, Ms. Ye’s body is not dominated and can not make a sound, can only try to open their eyes, eyes crying until red and swollen, but the doctor did not care. Only after the drug wore off did Ms. Yeh’s doctors notice the problem when she tried her best to shake her legs. In her journal, Ms. Ye described the surgery as “probably a near-death experience” that caused her great psychological damage.

It is reported that the surgery of general anesthesia should require the care of anesthesiologists throughout, in general anesthesia surgery, the patient is awake for a long time is an abnormal situation. According to Mr. Wang, a friend of Ms. Ye, a nurse told him that the anesthesiologist who was supposed to be in charge of the operation had left the operating room and later found that the patient’s abnormal reaction before the director of anesthesiology was called in to take over the adjustment.

Mr. Wang viewed the operating room surveillance video found that at that time Ms. Ye anesthetic infusion tube blocked for a long time, but no one noticed, “the doctor said that at that time because the anesthetic infusion tube folded and blocked, resulting in anesthesia only one-fifth of the infusion, the talent will wake up.” Mr. Wang also said that most hospitals have explicit orders prohibiting doctors from using cell phones while performing surgery, but when viewing the monitoring, it was found that the doctor had briefly answered the phone.
It is reported that the director of the anesthesiology department has explained to Mr. Wang the reason for Ms. Ye’s awakening during surgery, but did not answer why the patient’s abnormality was not detected for a long time, only that it was a lack of management and negligence, and made a verbal apology. Mr. Wang, on the other hand, said that Ms. Ye’s state after surgery has been bad, and has asked the hospital to produce a formal written apology and a letter of commitment for liability for the sequelae of the accident. Now that two weeks have passed since the surgery, he accused the hospital of still trying to shirk responsibility, not taking a positive attitude to respond to the problem, and rejecting the patient’s claims.
The Pingshan District Health and Health Bureau responded to the incident by saying that the staff did not yet understand the specifics of the incident and would investigate the matter and, if true, would punish the hospital accordingly.
