In an effort to curb the rebound and spread of the novel coronavirus outbreak, all face-to-face classes in Hong Kong schools will be closed from December 2 until after Christmas. On Sunday (November 30), 115 new cases of infection were confirmed in Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong government ordered the closure of schools as the number of new cases of the virus increased dramatically. This is the highest number of new infections in Hong Kong since the fourth wave of infections appeared over a week ago. It is also the first time since August 1 that Hong Kong has had a triple-digit number of new infections.
Of the new infections, 62 were contracted through dance groups, 23 cases could be traced to a source, 24 cases could not be traced, and 6 cases came from outside the country. In addition, 50 cases have initially tested positive.
Hong Kong government education officials revealed on Sunday that they have decided to close classroom instruction in schools from Dec. 2 until after Christmas, and that student counseling centers will be closed for two weeks.
The triple-digit daily number of new cases has prompted the left-center-right education union to call for a halt to face-to-face classes in Hong Kong’s kindergartens, primary and secondary schools. As of last Monday, kindergartens and elementary school in grades one through three have been closed to face-to-face classes for two weeks.
On Sunday, the Hong Kong government extended the suspension until the New Year.
At the same time, the Hong Kong government is preparing to test all caregivers of the elderly and the disabled for the virus. After the first wave of tests, the government plans to test these workers every week.
As of Sunday, there were 6,238 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in Hong Kong, with 109 deaths.
