“Proud Boys” fundraising 90% support from the Chinese diaspora

Last December, the Proud Boys, a conservative group, held an online fundraiser after a clash with Antifa in Washington. Eighty percent of the money raised by the group came from the Chinese community in the United States and abroad. The donors said they liked the idea of the Proud Boys.

According to a USA Today report published Tuesday (May 4), Chinese Americans and expatriates from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong donated about $86,000 to the organization through the crowdfunding site ‘GiveSendGo’ after members of the Proud Boys were stabbed in Washington, D.C., in December 2020. to help cover their medical expenses, which represents 80 percent of the total amount ($106,000).

Several donors said in public interviews that they supported the fundraising campaign for the Proud Boys because they opposed the practices of organizations such as Antifa.

“You should understand how we feel – we’re from communist China, we managed to get here and we appreciate it very much,” explained Rebecca Kwan, who donated $500 to the fundraiser. Some New York donors also said they support the Proud Boys because they are protecting people from violent attacks by groups like Antifa.

The far-right group Proud Boys declared their opposition to Antifa and BLM and confronted the groups in the streets after the Floyd death case broke in the summer of 2019. “The Proud Boys were investigated after the January 6 riots in Congress and accused by left-wing media of involvement in the violence.
