U.S. Department of Commerce urges Taiwan companies to provide more chips to U.S. automakers

The U.S. Commerce Department is urging Taiwan companies such as TSMC to give priority to meeting the needs of U.S. automakers to ease short-term chip shortages, Commerce Secretary Raimondo said Tuesday.

Reuters reported that Raimondo said at an event of the American business group “Council of the Americas” (Council of the Americas) that in the long run, it is necessary to increase investment to produce more semiconductors in the United States, and other key supply chains also need to return to their home countries or relocate to allied countries.

Responding to a question from a GM executive, Raimondo said, “We’re trying to see if we can get Taiwan and TSMC to prioritize the needs of our automotive companies, because there are a lot of U.S. jobs at stake, and TSMC is a big company there.”
