Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Zhang Xiangchen Appointed as WTO Deputy Secretary General

The World Trade Organization (WTO) today announced the appointment of four deputy secretaries-general, including Zhang Xiangchen from China, who is currently the deputy minister of commerce, and the WTO has had a Chinese deputy secretary-general since 2013.

According to the WTO website, Secretary General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala announced the appointment of four Deputy Secretaries General, namely Angela Ellard from the United States, Jean-Marie Paugam from France, Anabel Gonzalez from Costa Rica, and Zhang Xiangchen from China. Xiangchen Zhang of China.

Zhang Xiangchen is currently the 3rd ranked Vice Minister of China’s Ministry of Commerce and will be China’s representative to the WTO from 2017 to 2020. He has been involved in China’s foreign trade and economic work for many years and worked with Long Yongtu, China’s chief negotiator for WTO accession, where he was deeply involved in the negotiations.

Zhang Xiangchen’s appointment also allows the WTO to continue to have a Chinese Deputy Secretary General. The previous Chinese Deputy Secretary General of the WTO was Yi Xiaojun, who was first appointed in 2013 and reappointed in 2017.

Like Zhang Xiangchen, Yi Xiaozhun has previously served as China’s Ambassador to the WTO and Vice Minister of Commerce.
