Reuters: TSMC intends to expand investment in Arizona, planning to cover six fabs

Reuters reported on April 4 that TSMC plans to expand its investment in the U.S. state of Arizona and will build six factories, according to sources familiar with the matter.

A source told Reuters that TSMC’s plans to expand its plants in the U.S. are in response to a request from the U.S., but he would not provide more details. The U.S. requested it,” he said. Internally, TSMC is planning to build as many as six fabs.” He said it was not possible to provide a specific timeline at this time.

A second source with knowledge of the plan said TSMC had secured enough land for expansion when it acquired its first fab site in Arizona, “so they can build six fabs.”

A third source, a supplier involved in TSMC’s Arizona investment plan, said TSMC has informed them about plans to build a total of six fabs in the next three years.

Reuters said they have not been able to independently check whether the schedule provided by this person is true. When checking with TSMC, TSMC only responded to what President Wei Chieh-jia said at a press conference recently, TSMC targets the Arizona plant to start mass production in 2024, using 5nm technology to produce 20,000 wafers per month.

Wei said at the time, “We have acquired a large area of land in Arizona for flexible use. So, further expansion is possible. But we will first push forward the first phase. We will use it as a foundation and then decide what we will do next depending on customer needs.”

Asked if the plant expansion was at the request of the U.S., TSMC said, “As soon as there is any formal decision, we will disclose it to the public.”

TSMC announced last May that it would invest $12 billion to set up a 12-inch fab in Arizona, USA.
