Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), a subsidiary of the Hong Kong government, started to delete many episodes of its online platform YouTube in the afternoon, among which many episodes of “The Clanging Collection” were still available on YouTube at 3pm on Wednesday, but by about 4pm, many videos had been deleted.
The first to be deleted were programs that had just exceeded the 1-year deadline, such as “Complaint”, “I’m Home Every Day”, “Beaching” and “Exam Period”, which were uploaded in April last year. “Exam Period”. The four episodes had 310,000 to 440,000 viewers respectively before they were deleted.
A spokesman for RTHK recently confirmed that it will delete clips that have been on YouTube and Facebook and other platforms for more than a year, saying that the new arrangement is only in line with the consistent practice of RTHK’s web page, which currently only provides the past 12 months of RTHK’s official website to revisit the program.
RTHK program production staff union recently said that these clips are not only the efforts of colleagues, but also the history of Hong Kong, public broadcasters are not subject to commercial pressure, more conditions to share content with the public, “one size fits all” to provide only 1 year to relive, it is a pity. Also pointed out that the social media platform does not have a cap on uploads, can not see the need to take the program off the shelves, and that the content is the greatest asset, and the public to share the impact, the current approach is the opposite.
Although affiliated with RTHK, but RTHK has been supported by the people of Hong Kong, including in the anti-sending campaign period. On February 19 this year, the Hong Kong government released a report on its review of RTHK’s governance and management, pointing out that there were deficiencies in the editorial management system. On the same day, the Director of Broadcasting, Mr. Leung Ka Wing, terminated his contract early and was replaced by the Deputy Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr. Lee Pak Chuen.
RTHK’s programmes such as “The Clanging Collection” were requested to be taken down from the YOUTUBE platform.
