Japan says Chinese warships pass through waters between Hana-kuni Island and Taiwan

Japan’s Defense Ministry’s Unification Shogunate Supervision Department said on the 1st that a Chinese Navy frigate sailed north into the East China Sea that day via the waters between the westernmost island of Okinawa and Taiwan in Japan’s Okinawa Prefecture. Earlier, the frigate went south between Okinawa’s main island and Miyako Island, entered the Pacific Ocean, and then headed west of Yonaguni. The ship did not enter Japanese territorial waters and did not engage in dangerous behavior against SDF ships and aircraft.

Japan said the Chinese warship passed through the waters between Yonaguni and Taiwan. According to Kyodo News Agency today, quoting the Ministry of Unification of the Shogunate, this is the first time that the news of the Chinese warship passing through the waters between Wunaguni and Taiwan was released. The Defense Ministry believes that the Chinese side has become more active in the East China Sea, including around the Senkaku Islands (known as the Diaoyu Islands in China), and has stepped up its vigilance.

In addition, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said that a total of two Russian Navy destroyers and other ships were spotted heading south through the Tsushima Strait toward the East China Sea after the night of April 30. The Japanese side has been analyzing in detail the respective intentions of China and Russia. The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) spotted the Chinese frigate sailing around 1 a.m. on April 30, about 150 kilometers north-northeast of Miyako Island, and deployed patrol planes and frigates to monitor the movement of the Chinese frigate.

According to the report, in the waters between Okinawa’s main island and Miyakojima, the fleet of the Chinese naval carrier “Liaoning” and other ships sailed back and forth in April, and Chinese patrol planes and information-gathering planes were also spotted flying.
