China’s Hebei University of Geosciences recently ordered students not to leave campus during the long Labor Day holiday, citing an epidemic. However, about 100 students from the North Campus pushed open the gates and swarmed out of the campus with gusto on the 1st, causing heated discussions. The university responded that the students had been criticized.
May 1 to 5 is the Chinese May Day holiday. Because of the five-day holiday and the fact that many people responded to the official call earlier this year not to go home for New Year’s Eve, there was a huge influx of people traveling and returning to their hometowns throughout China from May 1 onward, with rail and highway stations and airports packed with passengers and highways congested. Therefore, Hebei University of Geosciences has banned students from leaving school during the holidays, which has caused dissatisfaction among students.
The Chinese network news and the Hong Kong Sing Tao Daily reported that about 100 students gathered at the entrance of the North Campus of Hebei University of Geosciences in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, and confronted the security personnel at one point. But the video footage shows that there were only a handful of security personnel and no other university personnel were seen.
According to the footage, one of the students pushed open the gate when the security personnel were not paying attention and took the lead in rushing out of the school through the gap in the gate, while other students followed and encouraged other students to boldly leave the school. Some students even raised their thumbs and shouted with joy.
In contrast, the security personnel were outnumbered and unable to stop them, and could only watch as the students left the school. In the video, no police or other security personnel are seen at the entrance of the school.

According to the report, the security department of Hebei University of Geosciences, surnamed Zhang, said that the university does not allow students to leave the school on their own during the five-day Labor Day holiday on May 1, but must be approved by the university before leaving, in order to consider the needs of epidemic prevention and control.
This Zhang surnamed personnel said, “What if something happens? To understand each other”, “there is no outside interference in the school, once there is any situation can be controlled”.
The video was widely circulated on the Chinese Internet from the evening of the 1st to today, and has caused a lot of debate among netizens. More netizens support the students’ approach, believing that Hebei is not an infected area at the moment, and schools in other provinces do not have such rules, so why should students be restricted from going out during the long holidays?
However, there are also netizens who believe that it is necessary for students to comply with the epidemic prevention rules in the face of the global epidemic. Otherwise, schools, institutions, enterprises and people across the country will follow the same example, and what will happen when the epidemic expands?
