The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that as of April 22, more than 3.71 million children have tested positive for COVID-19 since the epidemic began in the United States. However, childhood deaths from COVID are very rare, accounting for only 0.00%-0.19% of all COVID-19 deaths.
The Minnesota Department of Health said in a statement that they were “very saddened” by the confirmation of the six-year-old’s death. Although deaths in children associated with COVID are rare, they can occur even in otherwise healthy children,” the statement said.
The department confirmed that three children under the age of 18 have died from COVID-19 in Minnesota since the beginning of the epidemic.
The department added that because children under 16 are not yet eligible for COVID-19 vaccine, the best way to keep children safe is to “make sure that those around them who can get the vaccine do get it and that we continue to follow those measures to prevent the spread of the virus.
