India outbreak out of control White House wants to cede vaccine patents Commerce Department: fear of counterproductive

India’s new crown pneumonia (Chinese communist virus, COVID-19) epidemic continues to spiral out of control, the country is anxious to vaccine materials and patents to relieve the crisis, but the U.S. media revealed that the Biden administration is divided over whether the vaccine patents in the hands of various pharmaceutical companies, there are differences of opinion.

The epidemic in India continues to spiral out of control, with the number of confirmed cases breaking 400,000 on a single day yesterday (30), the first country in the world to break 400,000 new cases on a single day, bringing the cumulative number of cases in India to more than 19.15 million, and the number of deaths also increased by more than 3,500 on a single day yesterday, bringing the cumulative number of deaths to more than 210,000.

According to the Washington Post, social activists and progressives are urging the White House to support an internationally sponsored petition to cede the patent, including White House epidemiologist Anthony S. Fauci and U.S. Trade Representative David Deitch, who are inclined to support it so that developing countries can quickly produce the vaccine.

However, the Commerce Department and other officials warned that ceding patents could backfire, including by giving away intellectual property to rivals.

The petition to transfer vaccine patents was spearheaded by India and South Africa, and has been a seven-month effort by dozens of developing countries that has finally attracted attention, especially as the Indian epidemic rages out of control and affects global efforts to prevent it. They argue that easing patents will allow more countries to produce or import the scientific name vaccine without having to wait months or years.

But the U.S. and other wealthy countries, including the United Kingdom and Canada, are concerned that patent concessions will throw global vaccine production into chaos.
